Hi all
I'm going to buy a new Dell Vostro 1500 and I'm already thinking of oveclocking some of the components like GF 8600GT and T7250 CPU. And here comes the trouble. How do I have to do that (desktop computers are no threat for me), but I have no idea what about notebooks. I found a SetFSB software but I'm not sure if it's gonna fit this chipset (Intel Crestline - PM965). T7250 has 2,0GHz by default, but average o/c is about 2,4GHz ( http://tinyurl.com/yvfxca ). If sb did manage to oc this CPU what are Your scores?
Thanks a lot!

I would definitely invest in the T7300 the 4MB cache versus 2MB is a BIG difference in performance. As for overclocking the CPU in a word DON'T they run hot as it is. You can look at using better drivers with the GPU, but the CPU can cook very quickly in a laptop without any warning. Also, they are locked pretty tight.
-
I must ask why you believe that the 4mb makes a BIG performance difference? Everything that I have read and seen has said otherwise. A very slight performance increase, at best, is to be expected from the extra 2Mmb.
I am not sure it's possible to overclock a laptop, but someone with more knowledge should be able to help out. -
@philfna, 4MB only makes sense if I'd be going to work with some video conversion/encoding, but I am not. 2MB more doesn't make any difference in gaming and everyday's work.
What is more, T7300 is no longer available in Vostro 1500.
As for the temperatures of CPU, I'm going to buy a Zalman Notebook Cooler ZM-NC1000 (I reckon oveclocked 8600GT will need it) so it's should NOT get too hot

cooling pads are crap, dont trust them for cooling your notebook.
DO you really buy that bs on Zalman's website. Yeah four-six cfm of air movement is going to do nothing to cut tempertures. The only real way to cool a laptop, is by using a fan control program.
Since your getting a dell, just download I8KFANGUI, and force the fans to high speed when gaming.

I've read some test of that cooling pad and it really works (of course, we can argue what does "really works" for both of us mean).
Obviously I'm not gonna buy it there, but I hope this "crap" will cool down my notebook a bit .
I think we've gone a little to far from the main topic - T7250 CPU, tell me sth more about oc'ing it and let me handle the temperatures -
Here is the sercet for overclocking, for some its not possible, but for those who know how to read their motherboards PLL chips it is. Download a copy of Clockgen. All you need to know, is the pll chip, which accesses the direct cpu/memory speeds, which enables you to overclock your cpu.
If you dont know the pll, try googling it, but usually one cant fond it for their notebook.
So, if you really want to overclock, but cant read pll's its good old trial and error.

Damn it. I hoped I won't be forced to check PLL by looking inside my notebook, 'cause I'm really not kinda "open as well as U can" and "check as well as U can"
. But if You say, that maybe Master Google would know, I'll try

As K-TRON said, you can do it by TRIAL AND ERROR. Before you start, take out your battery and be prepared for some possible lockups. What you do is go into Clockgen, click PLL Setup, check the "Ignore GSB/PCI" and then for each and every PLL available in the dropdown box do the following. Click the "Read Clocks" button to "change" the clocks based on if it used that PLL. Then, once you've done that, go back into the main window (you can leave the PLL Setup window open, it doesn't matter) and click PLL Control, this will bring up a new window showing your clocks based on the PLL you just selected. If it's gibberish or you can adjust but the settings don't stick, it's because the particular PLL you selected a while back don't work for your MB, but you expected this since you're doing it by trial and error. Eventually you may either find one that works or you may go through the list and not one works. If it works, check the "Apply current settings at startup" in the Options tab, IF YOU WANT THE CLOCKS TO ALWAYS BE HIGH, NOT JUST WHEN YOU NEED A BOOST. If it doesn't work, well then you're just stuck until the next version of Clockgen comes out and hopefully has support for your MB. I haven't done this yet in my current laptop but tell me if it works for you.
PS. I've got a T5450 in mine. -
Good luck. Interested to hear some results, heat output + performance increases?
-
I tried all of the pll's on my U709, but no luck.
I heard you cant overclock with Corsair valiue series memory, but who knows. I dont think you can overclock the d900k chassis.
Good luck, I hope you have patience, if not dont waste your time.

Most reviews tend to find that the latest well designed coolers have a noticeable effect. A cooler would be a wise buy.
-
Maybe I'll try that Clockgen with Try and Error and I hope to succeed ;] The newest version is 1.0.5.3 I presume?
moon_angel: what kind of coolers are You talking about? For example that Zalman I mentioned before? -
With gaming there is a fair amount of math involved that places demands on the CPU -- the T7300 and up with 4 mb caches does make a difference. Where as with office apps and web surfing I'd agree no real improvement.
-
@philfna, maybe You are right, but I'm not gonna pay 140$ more for T7500, cause (as I said before) T7300 is no longer available and T7250 seems to be the best choice.
