I am looking into the Dell xps m1530, and I want to customize it. Its pretty good deal as is, but I was wondering if I should go with maybe the

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7700 (2.4GHz/800Mhz FSB, 4MB Cache)

    Instead of

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7500 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB, 4MB Cache)...

I mean would it make much of a difference on games and the overall performance of the machine?

I also was wondering if it is worth it to upgrade the screen to

High Resolution glossy widescreen 15.4 inch LCD(1680x1050)

instead of Glossy, widescreen 15.4 inch LCD (1280x800) which just comes with the xps normally. Thanks guys!

I'd say the extra 200MHz isn't worth the cash...it rarely is.

With regards to screen resolution though, I can help you compare.

This link will take you to my post showing all the 15.4" resolutions that you are looking at, and directly compare how the windows desktop and the like will look with either of your choices. Personally, I'd take 1680x1050 (the 8600GT should handle many games at 1280x800, and some if not many at 1680x1050 so you'll have a choice). The biggest thing is that 1680x1050 is just downright more productive in my opinion.

The screen resolution upgrade is worth it, MUCH more real estate.

However, for $125 dollars, you should gain more than 200mhz, so it's not worth it. You probably wouldn't see a difference.

Without knowing what they are charging hard to say, but, the CPU upgrade is going to make almost no difference in almost all real world usage and the ones it does likely more of a benchmark/stopwatch type not really perceptible. I would pay $50 even though I don't think it is worth that.

Onto the screen I think you would like the higher resolution, it gives more real estate allowing you to see more of whatever is on your screen, not enough for 1080 HD but still nicer. Judgment call. Good luck, they seem to charge so much extra. I would pay $100 maybe a little more I don't know.

Go with the T7500, your video card will probably be the bottleneck to games. I think the WSXGA+ (1680x1050) is worth the upgrade since I feel WXGA (1280x800) isn't enough pixels.

If I were you, I would pick 15.4" (1280x800). 15.4" at 1280x800 is a very sweet spot for long time reading. 15.4" at 1680x1050 cramps too many pixels in my opinion. You may have to squint while reading text since the font would be too small. I have 13.3" at 1280x800 and I already have a problem reading some texts. I know you can make the font bigger but sometimes that is not the ideal solution. Some websites, for example, look funny once you increase the font beyond its default size. Moreover, the font and icon size of most applications can not be changed.

Additionally, you can play your game at higher frame rate at 1280x800 than at 1680x1050. You can always reduce the resolution lower than its native resolution your screen can support, but doing so may make the game and the font look funny.

you can always increase the font size. honestly though, you can cram all the pixels you want on a 15.4" screen and it will still be a 15.4" screen. More pixels does not equal more screen estate. IMO there is little reason to get more pixels unless you do some heavy graphics editing.

Or you could go 1440x900 and get a nice compromise :spinny:

Actually a higher resolution will give you more screen real estate. It makes everything smaller so you have more room. You have more room on a 15" 1680x1000 screen than on a 15" 1280x800
