I know that the T8300 is on a smaller process - would it run that much cooler than a T7700? And would the extra 1MB of L2 cache make a performance impact?
Either one is a great upgrade to my system AFAIC - faster FSB and 25% more CPU speed.

The extra mb wont be a huge difference and it wont run much cooler, if a couple degrees at most.

Good to know - I've found a few deals for T7700s that are cheaper than T8300s. I'll go for it then. Thanks!

either one is fine, but the T8300 will probably run faster (not much though) because of better optimization
Get the T8300 if possible (cooler running too), but if theres a big difference in price get t7700

The T7700 is one of the fastest Merom processors. The T8300 on the other hand is one of the lower spec Penryn processors and usually can be found cheaper than even the older T7700 (since people who are limited to upgrading with Meroms drive up the price)

How much of a price difference are we talking here? If the price difference is only $40-50 the T8300 may be a better choice.

    Go straight for the Penryn.

    I'm talking about ~$100 - I found a low-ball auction somewhere for a T7700 on the cheap.
Otherwise, I'd go for the T8300.

$100 doesn't justify the difference... Go with the T7700
