I recently opened up mine and my wife's laptops(both HP) to put in Arctic Silver. the suprising thing was the processors were numbered Exxx instaead of T8100 andf T9400. I thought that numbereing was followed for Intel Mac processor equivalents. The processors have always showed up as T8100 and T9400 in Vista so i was very surprised to find this.

    Anyone else has noticed this?

Exxxx are usually standard desktop Intel Core 2 Duo CPU's. Interesting...

Could this be related to some laptops having Core2Duo stickers and others Centrino stickers?

Centrino just means that there is an Intel wireless card that came with the laptop. All laptops, with the exception of one or two ultra-powerful so-called "laptops" by boutique manufacturers, use laptop CPUs, not desktop CPUs.

These numbers are probably manufacturing plant identification codes, rather than the model number of the CPU. I wouldn't worry about it unless the processors are not being recognized to be what they are supposed to be.

Centrino is a whole platform, rather than a CPU. A normal laptop, supporting those two technologies should have the two of them. It's no biggie if a laptop doesn't have one of them, and I don't think it should matter, because 98% of the people simply remove them.
Overall I don't think it's somehow related to adesai's question.

    Are you sure?
I know Centrino is a platform.

But why aren't all laptops labelled "Centrino".
What is the actual difference on the ones with a "Core2Duo sticker"?
    Just wi-i??

By the way, to the OP.
You can download CPU-Z - that'll tell you all you ever wanted to know.

This is a different tool that will do the job too:

CPU-Z, CoreTemp, etc all show it as T9400 and T8100. Guess i was probably reading the wrong set of numbers. Am too lazy to re-open the laptops up.

I know on the P7450 and T9600 the bottom black label the last 5 digits of the top line shows the number. Theres several things on there the bottom of the bottom label is usually the specs.

The Centrino mobile platform is a marketing creation that is composed of 3 parts: the chipset, CPU, and Wi-Fi card. When all three of these are Intel components, the laptop is branded as having "Centrino technology," and have the red sticker. When the Wi-Fi card is not Intel's, as is the case on most budget laptops, the laptop is branded as having "Core 2 Duo technology" and has a blue sticker.

In most cases, if a laptop has the Centrino sticker, there is no Core 2 Duo sticker, as that would be redundant.

Centrino 2 refers to a Centrino platform of the Montevina generation.

Ah Ok, thanks. I knew about the Montevina bit :) and Santa Rosa is Centrino (1) ;)

I thought though that the blue stickers could have indicated a different CPU - it seems I was wrong then.
