I really would like the P9500 processor in my thinkpad... does anyone know if it's possible or plausible to self-upgrade the chip? Is it accessible? Is it compatible?

    Thanks!

It's completely doable. Most laptop notebook CPUs nowadays are socketed. I upgraded my R60 from a T2300e to a T7400. The caution I would mention is Lenovo will not take kindly to your efforts in term of your warranty in case you have to send it in for service. It may not be an issue if the tech doesn't check it, but if they do it will likely void your warranty. If you're doing it for performance purposes, unless you have a specific need I doubt it's worth the trouble.

T400. It may be foolish of me but.... I want an LED backlit screen for a laptop with discrete graphics and 6MB cache as well as operating at 25W. *sigh*.

You could undervolt your current cpu, to drop the max power consumption to 25W, and the advantage of the extra cache would be significant only in intensive tasks....
You would rather see an overall improvement with a fast HDD (avoid SSD) and more ram.

It can be done and I would not worry terribly about the warranty. Should you have to send it in, just swap the original processor back in the laptop.

I think he meant he has the P8400. It's a 25W cpu with 3M cache.

The P9500 is a little faster clock speed and has 6M cache.

Undervolting won't increase the cache. ;)

Have you called to see if you can change your order to include the P9500?

It is an option for the T400 but probably not available through most channels just yet.

I wouldn't waste the money and effort. The TDP is hardly ever reached. At idle, there is no difference in power consumption and the speed difference is negligible, so you will see no benefits.
