I'm starting uni and they said you have to pay tv licence unless you have a tuner that runs on it's own power (i.e. does not plug into the mains) and has it's own atena (i.e. your not using the cable from the arieal on the roof) so i found this tv tuner http://www.avermedia.com/avertv/Product/ProductDetail.aspx?Id=447

it seems to tick all the boxes so that i wont have to pay tv licence, can someone confirm this does? or recomend me one? Thanks

The small antenna bundled with these tuners will only pick up a usable signal if you are close to a transmitter. Have you checked on the transmitter location.

Which country do you live in? If UK then you will still need a license to view live tv streams. If outside of th UK then I'm unsure

    Hi.

Everytime you buy a tv or dvd player or tv tuner in the UK, the store takes your name and address and sends it to the BBC so they know they should pay a tv licence it`s currently £139.50 a year!!

EDIT : I think the BBC get something like 2 billion £ a year in licence fees!!

not if you buy your devices from the internet (ebay...) or a street market :D

I'm just saying this since my landlord pays his TV licence

    Edit:
OK if you have a receier than you owe to pay. But why do you have to pay if you have a TV and a DVD player, and you use you TV only to watch DVDs?

If the TV has a built in tuner and can pick-up BBC channels , you have to pay for a licence by law, even if you dont watch them.

If you could connect a DVD player to a computer monitor, then you would not have to pay the licence, as you dont have a tuner and cannot receive BBC channels.

FREDTED40x well if ur term time address is at ur parents then you dont have to pay a tv licence as the tv licence is per household and not per person.

Someone above said the quality of the signal i would recive would be dependent on how close i was to a transmitter with the antenna it comes with, and if i can recive a decnt quailty pic then i would purchase it as it does meet the requirements (obviously phone beforehand to make sure) and if it didnt recive a decent pic i musthook it up to the main antenna and disconnect it when i don't use it and just say that i use the antenna it came i with

Wrong, you only pay if you actually receive any TV signal. For laptops, I don't think you need to as it states you don't need a license if the receiving device is powered by an internal battery.

That's what me and a friend studying law concluded anyway :)

Well it's just another tax that people living in the UK have to pay.

I thought that the TV licence was a means to leae the BBC(s) ads free. Since they started putting advatisments in their website they should concider reducing the Licence fees.

    This quote is from tvlicensing.co.uk
Does this means that if someone owns a TV or else but doesn't receive any TV program, he/she is not obliged to purchase a TV licence?
