Hello all, this is my first post.

My daughter was forced to purchase a laptop PC through her university. Now that it is two years old and out of warranty it has crapped out. The university PC repair department wants $1300 to repair the laptop and it only cost $1400 new! We bought our daughter a new MAC book laptop to replace the broken one and now I have her old one. Can it be fixed?

I think the laptop is a clone of another brand so maybe I can repair it myself if I can find out what parts. It is a Tangent Shuttle 9100. I've spent over an hour searching the web for info/parts about this laptop and have found NOTHING other than at the Tangent website (which provides next to nothing in terms of information). When I contact Tangent they just refer me to the University repair facility (the $1300 one).

    Any suggestions?

What is the problem of it?Doesn't boot up or anything else?

PS:I won't ever pay 1300 to get a 1400 worth laptop bought 2 years ago.

can you post a picture of the laptop, since you said it looks like a clone of some other brand. Maybe we can figure something out from that.

Hi. Thanks for the quick responses.

I don't have a picture handy but here is a link to the manufacturer datasheet with a photo:

    http://www.tangent.com/products/datasheets/Shuttle9100.pdf

As far as the symptoms, here is what it does:

    - Unit is fully charged and plugged in
    - When pressing the power button the LEDs come on momentarily and the fan comes on for a second or 2. After that just the power LED stays on but the fan goes off and the screen never flickers.
    - If I hook up an external monitor it will briefly flicker during the brief period that the fan is on but it quickly goes to "no signal" (after about a second).
    - I have tried removing the battery and only using the AC power supply and it does nothing in that case (not sure if it is supposed to work without the rechargable battery installed)

I hope it wasn't the University of Dayton because I have heard nightmares about Tangent and UD. I went there. I have a Shuttle 7700. Tangent must make a killing off of the students at UD. The warranty on my computer didn't cover much after the first year and the Tangent people at UD charge an arm and a leg. Sorry, I can't be of any help. But I do want to turn this into a quick PSA: If you go to UD, don't buy a Tangent.

Yes, it was UD. I concur with your observations regarding Tangent equipment and services at UD. The PC was very expensive for mediocre equipment and the service has been poor/expensive as well. Software did come with the PC so that counts for a portion of the high price but MS Office is really the only required software except maybe in Engineering.

We have since bought her a Mac Book (not through the University) and it has been working fine for her. The school implies that you must buy equipment through UD but in reality you can get your own PC and software.
