    Hey guys,

I'm planning on buying a notebook lock for my new dell latitude d820. I am deciding between a combination lock from Targus (defcon series) or from Kensington (microsaver series). Which of these two brands are more reliable, durable, and will more likely prevent my laptop from being stolen? Thanks.

They're both equally unlikely to prevent your computer from being stolen :D

Never leave the thing unattended in public.

^^ I second that. Locks are good for, say, if you want to leave your laptop on the desk while you get a soda from the machine. And that's about it. Don't trust one for more than a few minutes. A lock really only keeps an honest person honest, so whichever one works better for you (key, combination, whatever) is the type you should get. They'll all work about the same other than that.

I'm not asking whether I should get a lock or not, but what brand of notebook locks are better?

I personally haven't heard of any brand being better, aside from debates which design (combination or key) is better.

Bottom line: You should be fine in either selection, as what some have already posted. Both are recognized brands, and it's there as a deterrent.

Don't get snippy. I answered your question. Try reading next time.

I suppose I should have said "all brands work about the same", but I figured you'd be able to deduce that.

It's a growing problem? Amazing... it's almost like, more people have laptops, and they're carrying them around, and anything that's worth lots of money and being bandied about in public is a target for theft...

BTW, it's spelled "messenger", not "messanger". You people doing these surveys really need to hire some competent copy editors.

EDIT: This was all in response to a spam message, apparently deleted by a forum moderator ;) I'm not completely crazy... honest...

I used to work for a company which sold both brands of lock. There is an advantage to the Targus Defcon Lock. If you lose the combination to it, the combo is tied to the serial number (printed on the lock itself), so you can have the combination retrieved through Targus or the retailer you bought the lock from.

...so does that mean if I'm clever and get a couple of the locks, I can figure out the pattern? Or are they completely randomly assigned and kept in a database at Targus?
