Do anybody here use their laptop to download stuff (either bit torrent, emule, or direct download) overnight? If you do, how hot does your laptop get?

I placed in an order for lenovo T60 thinking I can use it to download torrents overnight (and shut down during day time while I work). Is it harmful to the laptop in general (hardware + battery)?

A side question - Can the T60 operate using only the power cable with the battery removed?

No it's not harmful, if you leave it on overnight without checking up on it. it should not have a problem, but you might want to get a notebook cooler if you want to be 100% sure.

All notebooks should be able to work with just the AC cable plugged in with the battery removed.

Alot of people leave their notebook on for long periods of time. I sure do, but I keep it regulated(notebook cooler) and clean the vents periodically.

Also make sure that you set the CPU to dynamic swtiching even when pluged in. So that the laptop clocks down and uses less power. Underclock your graphics card if you can.

If your download client has the option tell it to keep a large cash in ram. I told mine to keep 200MB of downloads in ram and then write it all at once to hard disk. This will limit diskactivity.

Lastly dont shut the lid but just turn off the screen. Laptops tend to get hotter with closed screens.

All of this is just extra. The T60 is a good laptop and should work download without problems without any of the tips above.

Generally, computers are made so that they don't overheat under normal operation. Period. They overheat if you block the vents or stop the fan, but they do not overheat just because they are switched on. Even if they are switched on for more than 20 minutes. ANd even if they actually perform work while they're switched on.

If any of this causes it to overheat, return the system and demand a refund.

Computers do not overheat unless something is wrong.
