Whenever I connect my laptop to my external monitor my temps jump up, even though I have my GPU pegged at 2D performance mode, limiting it's clocks to 169/100.

When I am running without my external screen, my GPU temps are around 60C but when I connect the external monitor they shoot up to 66-67C. Driving a desktop from 1280x800 to 1680x1050 can't cause a 6C jump.... can it?

I checked the clocks to see if they had jumped, but they are at the standard speeds.

The thing that's really worrying me is the fact that my HDD temps jump from 48 to 54-55C. I've got the laptop on a podium and even keep the lid open about an inch just to try to minimize any heat buildup.

Any ideas as to why this is and how to stop it?

Try leaving your lid fully open and making the back of the laptop breathe. Make sure the lid is fully open because i notice if i close my lid and use an external monitor the heat is higher and my keyboard gets really hot.

Ya, like I said, it's on a podium so it's got lots of room to breathe. Heck, when it's not connected to the external monitor it's on a flat surface or in my lap where the ventilation is a lot worse, yet the temperatures aren't nearly as high.

Heck, even when playing videos and such the temperatures don't shoot up. I don't get it.

Right now, it's in my lap (ventilation sucks as part of the back vent is blocked), playing a video, and my GPU is at 60C and HDD at 48C. Connected to the external monitor, it's on a podium thus propped up with great ventilation, not doing anything, and the GPU is at 66 and HDD at 54.

    It's driving me mad.

Well the gpu is doing more work producing the image at a higher resolution. Try setting the resolution down and see what happens. (Resolution on the external)
