huh interesting. clean out the exhaust/intake systems. Make sure there's no dust.
I know certain Sony VAIO's (newer) had a defective fan issue, they used cheap sleeve bearing fans that would eventually come completely loose.

Clean the fan and lubricate it! The above is not entirely true - new VAIOs don't have this problem - you are talking about a certain model that is already 2 years old.

Does the noise disappear when you put load (eg. running a game) on the CPU and/or disconnect all USB devices?

I think he has that same issue I have been reading about on this forum with a few laptops.

On battery he is getting a cpu whine. On AC power it goes away.

I read some people changed the power settings in Win 7 to fix the issue.

No I am quite certain that laptop was under 1 year old since it was a w7 laptop. Core 2 duo, 2.2 ghz. 4gb of ram, intel IGP. But yes 2 years ago there was also another far larger Sony Vaio fan incident however this newer laptop exhibited the same noise before the fan finally fell off the heatsink assembly sure enough the fan was very wobbly.. Luckily we had a replacement fan for it with us.
