Hey, I recently was having problems with my Realtek audio...the program wasnt responding to changes I made so I tried to uninstall it from Control panel. It gave me setup.exe has stopped working error so I manually unistalled it and then rebooted.

The realtek device was mostly gone but I was not getting any audio from my system, so I installed the newer version of realtek and rebooted. Still no sound. I went to my device manager and uninstalled the driver for sound an rebooted. still no sound...

I have searched forums and tried things for days, and nothing seems to work. I've done pretty much all the basic things I need to do in order to try to get it working again.

In addition, when I plug a USB headset device in, and uninstall the driver from device manager, I DO get sound in my headphones, but as soon as I unplug them, no sound anymore. There is a little red x on my audio device on the task bar and when I scroll over it, it says "High Definition Audio Device" but it still doesn't recognize it?

I am using a Sager np5796 and Vista 64 bit Ultimate.

If you have any idea on what I can do next, it is really appreciated

    Thanks!

Sounds like there might be a hardware failure in your sound system... do you have some sort of diagnostics utility (provided by your OEM) with which you could test the hardware? It doesn't work with a standard (non-USB) headset, does it?

If your onboard audio device is indeed broken (and not like your speakers or something), an external sound device (like a USB, ExpressCard, PCMCIA sound card) will get you around that problem (meaning it should give you sound again), though it isn't a terribly elegant solution.

alright i'm really mad....I went to Best Buy and bought the X fi sound USB card and installed it. The device installed successfully and I rebooted my computer and plugged my headphones into it, only to get no sound again?

What is wrong?! When I enter my Bios, I hear a beep, so i know my sound is there.
