I'm a newbie at this, but I'm learning quick... and the best way to learn? To screw up royally, of course!

Threw away a bad hard drive for my V2000 from Compaq. Forgot to UNATTACH the IDE connector that allows my NEW hard drive that just came in the mail to be attached.

    Yes, wonderful, joyous...

Is there anywhere in the world I can buy one of these lil connectors as a stand-alone part? I checked the Compaq parts manual and all they list is the "HD - with frame and connector". No connector as a seperate part to order... so... I'm kinda stuck unless I can find a third party or something/someone that sells that part by itself.

I'd call HP. I am sure they have one you can buy.

Your best bet is to scour eBay, then, and see if somebody with a broken one is farming it out for parts. Maybe post a few "want to buy" threads around different forums, if you're so inclined.

No part number. The only part numbers that exist are for the entire assembly including the overly priced harddrives. I checked; a 60 gig HD is $400.00 USD.. downright robbery.

But you can't get the part without the rest of it and they're aware of what they're doing.

whoa whoa whoa, why would you throw away your harddrive?

Is your system new or old? No warranty?

Even if it's dead why would you throw it away in the trash like that?

    Who does that?

    Oh gorsh.

I would take a look in those used computer shops if you have any close to you. Those little shops have EVERYTHING. I mean EVERYTHING. Don't just think of getting things online, remember there are such things as stores out in the world hahaha

Cheers and goodluck, I'm sure you'll find one,
    Mike

I didn't throw away the old hard drive. The guy who gave it to me wanted to keep the hard drive for his new system he was having built for him and whoever made him the system threw the connector away. So I don't have the connector. The guy who gave me the computer wasn't very literate, technically speaking; lotta bucks, not a lot of skills. :p So now I'm stuck with this wonderful system with a broken fan that I can replace easily, but I need an IDE connector.

Yeah, sorry, I realize I misspoke down there at the bottom. I meant to say I threw away the fan. :p

This will sound weird as hell, but here it goes: You could try making your own.

I remember that once I created a data cable for my hp calculator using an eraser, cutting with an exacto knife and then carving the holes with a pin.

LoL...Hucsman you are extremely creative. An engineer of the future in the making hahaha.

No seriously though that is pretty creative.

Crassus, that stinks like poo. You tried HP and they don't have or refuse to give you one, so try another company. Give'em an email and see if they will accomodate you. I would try Western Digital as they have great customer service.

Like I said your best bet is local computer shops.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Heh, actually, yesterday, I tried calling them again (to confirm with them my suspicions that my local shops didn't carry the part) and one of the guys from India REALLY spent a lot of time helping me out. The conversation ended when he gave me the address of the California authorized Compaq repair center... all the way up in Milpitas, CA. I'm going to see if I can squirm my way in somehow using my super-duper diplomatic phone skills and see if they can't drop me off a piece of plastic in the mail.

Please post another thread about that. It's not the topic of this thread.
