I'm 99% sure I'm buying a configured HP dv4000 and would like to order extra RAM from someplace like newegg at the same time. But I'm confused about what I need.... is it DDR2 PC4200? Looking at RAM sites, I see there also appears to be a difference in the number of pins.

Hmmmm..... so what's the difference between DDR and DDR2? I've been Goooogling and I note that some specs list one while others list the other. Does the requirement change if you put a faster processor in it?

    ddr and ddr2 are incompatible.

it's also independent of the processor so no need to upgrade.

Just so you know, there are two kinds of dv4000. The older model uses ddr, while the newer model uses ddr2.

Does your dv4000 have an x700 or integrated graphics?

If you have an x700 you definitely need ddr2. If you've got integrated graphics, then I'm not entirely sure, and it'd probably be a good idea to call HP and ask. It's unfortunate that this issue is quite confusing for everyone.

Aaaah...., there's the problem. I haven't bought the computer yet. It would be a new one, so I'd need the DDR2 then. PC4200? 220 pins?

Yep. PC4200. I think DDR2 is still 200 pins, only with a slightly different physical arrangement so you can't accidentally slip a DDR stick into the slot. But I'm not sure about the pin count.
