I spent the first half of this summer reading every laptop review I could find in preparation for getting a portable audio recording/editing computer, only to be slapped in the face as I started finding forum threads about a problem with newer non-Texas Instruments firewire controller chipsets. Go to any music gear forum and you'll find a good handful of people in my situation trying to figure out what is actually going on. There seems to be one guy, who runs his own Pro Audio laptop company (ADK Pro Audio), who is warning everyone that if you buy anything besides his laptops, or a mac, that the firewire bus will not be able to handle the dense level of communication required for mixing audio.
I can't find a single officially released or published article on the matter, and this guy will not disclose any information about his ODM for fear that he'll lose his monopoly. While I respect his business interests, it certanily doesn't help my confidence that he's the only authority on the subject.
Can anyone provide a published source to back this guy's claims up? I'm really interested in learning about what exactly is causing the problem - supposedly something to do with the various BIOS controllers being relegated to a smaller, less dedicated space. I'm a bit of a novice with motherboard issues, so any help would be really appreciated.
Here's a link to my conversation with him:
