    Guys,

Really excited about the new 750 gb @ 7200 RPM regular sized notebook hdds...

    1. Travelstar 7K750 | Hitachi Global Storage Technologies

    2. WD Scorpio Black

Anyone got their hands on either one of these...? Hows the performance ?

I was ready to buy a Travelstar 500 GB 7200 RPM but it would be foolish to not wait for these new 750 GB @ 7200 RPM....!!!

    Cheers :)

1TB 5400 drives out there too now that fit normal 9.5mm standards I think.

It's good to see even with SSD slowing moving closer to the average user that HDD tech is still advancing.

It will be that way for some time...the manufacturing tech is well established. It would not be a stretch to see 7200RPM 2.5" drives reach 2TB!

Which 1TB drive is 9.5mm? SSDs can fit more than 1TB of MLC in a 9.5mm 2.5", but the problem is that pricing is still far from HDD prices...

Yes the G53JW was one of the first to start showcasing these 750GB 7200rpm drives.

I am not sure, I just noticed when looking at the new G73 product page that you can order it with 1TB HDD's and I know the G73 is a standard size hard disk.

    Asus G73SW-A1 17.3" FHD/GTX 460M 1.5GB GDDR5/i7-7260QM/8GB DDR3/1TB 7200rpm SSD Hybrid/BD/ Pre-Order: GenTech PC Store

They have the optical bay hdd option too, so you could get one with 3TB of HDD :D

No, they say 1 TB because it's dual 500 GB drives... so 1 TB total. It's not a single 1 TB drive. Notice down in the configurator for the link you provided that the default is 2x Momentus XTs... for the 1 TB 7200 RPM SSD Hybrid. Now, thanks to Hitachi's 500 GB 7.5mm drive, which we _think_ is a single platter, there's the possibility for a standard height (9.5mm) 1 TB drive, but noone's come close to announcing one yet.

ya what i want to figure actually about this is at what point will a standard 2.5 inch hdd saturate 3.0 gb sata 2.

There will be a point somewhere about 2 tb 7200 rpm where the old tech will be just as maxed out as an ssd as far as thoroughput for all the laptops made today and backwards several years.

Its stock 500gb XT's you can however choose 1TB 5400rpm drives in each slot and the optical bay. Just look at the part options not the stock config.

Oh, hm, you're right. Don't know how my eyes managed to skip over those the first 3 times (and yes, I did look through those options previously). Maybe I'm just too used to looking for 1 TB instead of 1000 GB. Some further searching, though, seems to state that the G73JW _can_ take 12.5 mm HDDs (Owners' Lounge here), so it could just be the regular good old WD Blues (which fit the profile).

    Since a 600GB, 10,000 RPM vRaptor still can't manage that - I would say never. :(

I had a WD5000BEKT (500GB Scorpio Black), which I replaced with a Hitachi 7k500, and I Love the Hitachi. It's just as fast, but much much less vibrations, with the WD it was quiet seeking, but it vibrated my entire case ( 2010 MacBook Pro). The Hitachi sounds just like the stock drive, but's as fast as the Scorpio Black.

I have replaced too many Hitachis and see too many of them fail. And the fact they are always cheaper than WD or Seagate is a bad sign. In the computer business cheap = crap 99.9% of the time.

To be honest, I haven't had an HDD fail on me yet, and I've used Seagate, WD, Hitachi, and Samsung.

I've had 12 Hitachi drives and haven't had one fail on me. Seagate has been the one with the most documented problems in last couple years, and they still charge more.

Pretty much. Half the Macs that come in for service have bad hard drives, and surprisingly they are all Hitachi hard drives.

And JohnnyFlash, I have owned WD and Seagate my entire life. I haven't bought a new Seagate drive after the disaster with the 1.5 TB Barracudas. That's why I only buy WD these days. The 1 and only Hitachi drive I owned (160 GB 5400rpm) in my Vostro 1500 failed on me, though wasn't a complete and utter failure.

I've heard so many different people's views on HDD brands and I think they're all relatively about the same. Perhaps they just happen to be a batch of bad drives. My previous T410 HDD that failed this summer was a WD and IBM/Lenovo sent me a Hitachi replacement. I have a WD external (2.5 years) and a Toshiba portable external (.5 years).

I think HDD brands are a hit or miss. You get a good drive and you're more likely to go back to that brand in the future. I haven't been through many drives (only the three different brands listed above). But in the near future, I see myself getting a Hitachi or WD HDD or if I choose to get a SSD it'd probably be Intel.

On average, all HDD brands ARE the same in terms of reliability. While each company have had batches of bad drives, you can't generalize based on a few drives. Even if you owned 100 drives, it would not be representative of all the drives sold by a single company for a single year.

depends how much space you need, I have a 7k500 and it's been great! I've only filled it about half way, but if I ever need more space I have an external 500GB drive.

I'd say roughly the same, I haven't noticed any difference between the scorpio black and the 7k500 in terms of battery life.
