What is the deal with the business divisions of Dell/HP etc all killing of 15.4" laptops?
I get that 16:10 screens are a wee bit more expensive; but surely Dell/HP can spring for the dough on $1800+ laptops????????
Whats next, 16: 3 aspect ratio laptops that look like rulers???

Im also angry and sad about the PC industry shifting from 16:10 to 16:9, i mostly blame the Movie industry, but seems they are all steering toward 16:9, and even game developers like blizzard is favoring the 16:9 in their latest SC2, so i have learn to accept it already.

it's saddening really, watching older tv shows that are shot in 5:4 get killed even more on a 16:9 screen. I love my 16:10 screen and will hold out as long as possible until I have to give into 16:9.
-
People complained when they went away from 4:3, which is more usable for things like Office and Internet. There's not much you can do about it.
-
It's not Dell/HP's fault, they don't make the panels. They buy their panels from several sources (such as Samsung, AUO, etc.) and those manufacturers are switching over to 16:9 screens.
-
They dont make the panels but they do buy them. I find it difficult to believe that dell/HP would get no suppliers if dell/HP decided they wanted 16:10 panels (perhaps at a premium).
-
if u want to whine so much , you can snap up my Dv5t.. got a 16:10 pannel.. needs a screen cable replacement
... but i prefer 16:9 pannels to be frank... they make movies look better without black bars.
-
I actually kind of prefer my movies with black bars. Gives me space to put subtitles and captioning without blocking actual video space.
-
Your friends in the Motion Picture lobby at work!
-
Movies have black bars even with 16:9 though
-
Yea but they've always been a major proponent of widescreens
-
I dont think 16:9 screens are evil; I just want the option of having 16:10 for my typing/programming work.
-
On the business side, do you go with the cheaper 16:9 panels or the rarer and more expensive 16:10 panels? It's a clear choice for them and really doesn't matter what you (the consumer) thinks... Also, as a manufacturer, why make 16:10 when you can save more money on 16:9 panels.
-
Business notebooks should be 4:3, consumer notebooks should be 16:10.

msi's gaming series notebook still produce 16:10 ratio screens. However the latest series have moved on to 16:9
-
Unless it's mastered at 1080p like many blu-ray movies are. But I understand your point, movies are typically 2.45:1, and laptops are not primarily used to watch movies anyhow.
-
I'd be fine with 16:9 if they made a 18.4" with 2140x1200. I have a 17" 16:10 with 1920x1200 and the 1200 is addictive too me running apps etc, more than the 1920 would be fine as well......
-
I love 16:9! Well, until have a research paper and have two documents side by side.....
I wish computer/LCD makers would give smaller screens higher resolutions to try and make up for the lack of vertical space. -
16:10 will probably stick around for 17-inch workstation laptops, so perhaps it'll be able to stage a "comeback" one day.

edit: nevermind lol

You go with whatever the consumers demand. If the 16:10 panels are more expensive, you charge more. This fits in with the rationale of the business laptops commanding a premium over the consumer ones because customers are willing to pay for quality.
Dell/HP etc have dropped the ball on this one. They could have clearly stated to the panel makers that they will stick with 16:10 in the business division. But the numbnut MBA executives didnt have interest in doing what is right; they just didnt want another head on meeting. -

In theory you go with what the consumers demand, but the higher ups clearly care more about short term profit.
-
Short term profits for the higher ups. I dont think the profits for the companies themselves would have been hurt if they had stuck to 16:10 screens.
Dam MBAs and their only caring about figures attitude. -
It depends how the movie is shot. Some are 2:1 like you have noticed.
-
not if u get a proper player.. i have nver had problems playing latest movie dvds with 16:9 screens.
-
I don't care that much about the ratio. What annoys me is that it's almost impossible to find any laptop 15" or under with more than 768 vertical pixels. Even really expensive laptops still come at a crappy resolution. Dell's Studio line is the only 15" FullHD res machine I can find mainstream.
-
According to who? I watch all of my movies on my notebook. But then again I do everything on my notebook. That's what it's there for.
-
More laptops are getting it but not everyone can have it.. its supposed to be a premium item u know
-
Not all movies are shot in 16x9 and not all widescreen recordings of movies are in 16x9. It has nothing to do with what you are using to play the disc.
-
How about the Dell Precision M4500; or the Alienware M15x?
But yeah, I hate that its now very hard to find high res screens on consumer laptops. -
Those are premium laptops... What Pitabred meant was that laptops which cost under $1k and about 600-800 range don't have full HD screens...
-
You can get 1600x900 on lots of 15.6" laptops though, which I think is the sweet spot for that size anyway.
-
1600*900 isn't very popular though. Either you get the base 1366*768 or you get the premium 1920*1080. Only a handful of notebooks get the "in between" option.
-
No no...no no NO...no no
We used to have 1400x1050 on 14.1" laptops which was perfect.
900 vertical pixels on a larger laptop is going backwards.
1920x1080 is ok..1920x1200 is better
-
1920X1080 is great.. 1920X1200 is excellent but not needed...
-
And for the rest of the blind folk, 1366x768 will suffice.

King of Interns Simply a laptop enthusiast
Why has 1680x1050 been phased out anyways? I have such a screen and I have yet to see a crisper better screen whether browsing, typing or watching blue-ray films.
Reading this thread I can understand why people might be a little disappointed with newer LED based 16:9 screens. I guess one has to get either 1600x900 15.6" or go straight to 1920x1080 or better with a new laptop purchase. -
Are there any 15.4" 16:10 laptops still available, besides the Apple MacBook Pro?
Makes me wonder if the next refresh of the MacBook Pro (probably coming out in early 2011) will be 16:9. If so, I better snag one of the current models.
-
MSI GX640-260 is 16:10 1680x1050.
-
i think 16:9 is perfect for word documents (you can have 2 windows open for left side and right side. (or display 2 pages at a time)
-
man i miss my old laptop it had a 15.4 inch with 1600x1200...freakin awesome! And that thing had the best viewing angles. Why do current laptops have the crappiest angles ever. My 7 year old HP NC8000 could be read from 170 degrees! and from like any angle up and down.
edit i will give you that the 2 pages side by side is nice for homework. Especially taking classes online with e books. but what happened to the best screens ever! The hybrid screen i called it. 1920x1200! that screen is the -
That's resolution dependent. My 16:10 15.4" 1920x1200 laptop screen has a higher resolution than any 16:9 laptop screen, so it displays more words if I have two documents open side-by-side.
-
Eh, 16:10 has the same width ratio, more length, so you can easily display 2 pages at a time, and more vertically.
1280x800 ~ 1366x768
1680x1050 > 1600x900
1920x1200 > 1920x1080
16:10 WINS!
The death of 15.4" 16:10 laptops...
