I agree - if Kingston/Toshiba/JMicron were able to improve the small random writes by just a bit then it would solve the stuttering problem and make these drives useable.
But I've only seen 2 proper benches for the V-series (using IOMeter) and the results are very inconsistent.

Tech report on the new Intels...
http://techreport.com/discussions.x/17245 -
The new generation at <$200 for the 80GB MLC will be hard to resist. Of course, I think they'll probably be at $2/GB for low capacities by year end, so there is incentive for waiting a little bit longer.
-
Newegg has sold out of the Intel X25-M 80GB drives. Perhaps they are waiting for the new version to arrive?
-
$209 for the 80GB and $391 for the 160gb along with even better performance? Ohhhh mannnnnn.
If this is true.... wow.
OCZ and the rest will crap themselves. I can just see that "Tony" OCZ dude going like... OMFG. haha.
I still can't get over the fact that OCZ shipped a customer a blank hard drive and he had to deal with a guy named "Tony" on a forum to get it resolved.... haha. Too funny. -
It's not very often when manufacturers charge according to the exchange rate. It could be $180 in the US, it could be that $265ish figure that has been floating around. Does Intel usually, does anybody know?
-
According to the exchange rate it would be about $265. So you are right, they wouldn't be charging according to the exchange rate if they charged $209 for it.
They are saying it might be $209 considering that Europe tends to get the shaft when it comes to prices... if you check amazon.co.uk, they are charging $420 for the X25-M 80GB when you can get it for $315 off newegg.
We can't know for sure what the final price will be...
But if it's near the $200 mark, then like I said, man oh man...
And no.. nobody knows at this point.
BTW, seems like newegg has stock of the 80GB X25-M. -
Early pricing puts this in the territory that makes it foolish to buy any 64GB drive less that costs more than $150.
-
Is Intel releasing new 'Extreme' too or just the normal one?
-
Question of the year. If there is an E version coming out, I hope it's something that puts the 1st gen E to shame (more capacity, faster R/W and more iops...)
Oh, and kingston should put an E version of it's "kit" out too! -
We're getting close.
Are we seeing consistant July 31st release dates for Postville, or does only one/a couple sites have that date?
And then how long before Amazo n and Newegg have them on their sites? Same day?
*Is way too excited for a HW upgrade* -
I hope their SLC version finally maxes out the SATA/300 spec in R/W...
-
Ya'lls a bunch of SSD Fiends...just look at the last 6 pages in this thread. It's pityful! You should be ashamed of yourselves.
-
It really is pretty funny. When INTEL speaks, we listen

Intel SS-D's announced Link is Dailytech
Death to hard drives!
-
So its not actually "released" to consumers just yet????... wth man
-
Just got my new Studio XPS 13 with 256Gb of god loving ssd...as a Dell exchange from the m1330...
Nada better than free right? Oh...gotta 64gb Samsung slc ssd i will need to part with eheheh...not Intel though. -
They pulled the article for some reason...
No sign of it at Dailytech anymore. -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
Jayayess1190 has a magic rss feed from the future!! you know!
i like it that way. i've had ssds wich much higher write speeds (up to 200MB/s or so?!) still hibernate on the intel is MUCH faster. which is illogical due to it's 70MB/s write speed. and still true. it's weird... that drive is just fast, no matter what...
but i like the lowered latencies
now lets wait for the new pricing... and for the 320gb ones
-
i wonder if the 1st generation intel ssds will get another firmware upgrade to incorporate TRIM?
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
I hope both have the same firmware
-
i hope too, 'cos it'll sux for those of us who've bought the first gen... the firmware is supposedly upgradable right?
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
yep. allready did an upgrade. even works without erasing any data on disk. so it's quite cool
-
Wow. $225 is better than expected.
-
Apparently, the sequential write speeds of the 80GB and 160GB will be slightly different. The 80GB is supposed to have 90MB/s write and 160GB is at 100MB/s write.
I've carefully read through the site that benchmarked the Generation 2 X25-M using CDM and they seemed to have got better scores. It looks like the chipset combination wasn't good. Check the scores out again!

Interesting
-
Price of 225$ is just for box with 1000 Intel SSDs.
Read/Write latency down from 4200/4700 to 65/85 microseconds is fantastic. -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
bah, wanted to post the anandtech post.. haven't even read it yet
bah.
-
4200/4700 is a typo. The current "Ephraim" X25-M is at 85/115us. http://www.intel.com/design/flash/nand/mainstream/index.htm
Just a thought: If they manage to raise the random write speeds on par with the sequential write speeds, it'll clearly have a lot of impact. -
When can we expect Newegg or Amazon to start carrying them?
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
it's not a typo, but a reference to the latency of the "amazing" raptor
-
Price is even better than expected. Great news!
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
yes. who wants to buy 1000 ssds with me?
they're quite cheap if you buy them in a large package
-
Sure, i'll take one
-
I'll take 2!
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
okay, i'll take the resting 997.. now isn't that a good deal?
-
The new price is great... But I guess the UK price would still be an extortion for time to come, err...
I'd be very interested to see what OCZ and Samsung do. Vertex Turbo was recently announced, indicating that a faster drive than Vertex to compete, so I doubt there would be any major product releases for a while, thus all they could do is lowering the price substantially. My guess is that Samsung would probably drop the price of 256Gb drive to $450-ish soon.
How many would get OCZ alternative, if its priced close to Intel, I don't know; but I would guess purely Intel's brand would sell more, not to mention it's superior in many ways. Any idea if Indilinx controller will get refresh soon? -
Since Dell has the Samsung 256GB for $480 already (from $700), I wouldn't be surprised if we see it drop to $400 soon...
-
Man, this makes me feel all fuzzy inside.
I think Tony from OCZ is doing cartwheels right about now...
haha -
Seeing as how you need my 1 to get closer to 1000, i want a discount
Indilinx-based SSD's will have a place so long as they are less $ per GB, I believe. The only thing that they have going for them over the Intel is their higher sequential write speeds. -
Hey leave Tony alone!
OCZ FTW!
-
Price drop + TRIM support = DO WANT.
Heck, even a starving student like me can scrounge up $225 or so to afford 80GB of blazing speed (and the $30 or so to get an optical bay hard drive adapter). -
Nope, that'll be retail price very soon, I expect...
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10010790 -
So 4200/4700 microseconds are for fastest HDD VelociRaptor, a 2.5" HDDs have at least twice as that.
If You compare fastest 2.5" HDD to new Intel...
-
Yes, for now it is price for 1000 units and, of course, prices will go down.
BTW: maybe guys at ZipZoomFly took 10 000 units -
Yes, but this means they have to drop in price by quite a bit right about now. If you check out AnandTech's article, you will see that the new Intels cost less per GB than Indilinx drives.
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
well mine had 15ms latency.. and i went to 1ms..
but yes, it's more than impressive
-
I'd also take 1, so you'll get 996, if you don't mind
-
Im a bit new to SSDs. But is the new Intel 34nm better than OCZ's Vertex SSD ,because the Vertex that would appear to have a greater write speed an it also has a fairly high read speed.
-
Sequential R/W speed isn't everything. That's pretty much the only area where the Vertex exceeds the Intel. Random R/W speed have a much greater impact since OSes require many random R/W upon booting up and the Intel is by far the best in the consumer market.
