I got my quadcore + 24" for (back then) <2000$ instead of >3000$.

I got my 2370p for <1000$ instead of >3000$ in my config.

Then again, I'm the one SUPPORTING your statement :)

and yes, we're just waiting for tests and more (better) prices to pop up :)

Darn - already ordered. Maybe I can have that applied after the order is submitted? I just wrote customer service. I'm sure they won't help me out.

I think every SSD and HDD I've seen have lower 4K reads than writes... don't know why either, don't really care though :p

For HDD's, I always thought it's because you can buffer writes but not reads. For some SSD's maybe the same principle can apply, although like Dave's example above, it's definitely not the case on my Vertex (4kb reads are ~3x writes)

Hmm reviewing some of the later SSD CDM shots, I guess a lot have better reads than writes, except the Intel... I guess it has to do with their controller.

Hello, im pretty dure this question has already been asked a few times, but you know... i didn't have time to read all 702 pages! so i was asking myself if changing the HDD for an SSD was voiding the warranty... for a vaio as an exemple.. i dont have it yet, but i might by an ssd for the laptop, not in the coming months but later... it's just to know... thank you

it depends on the manufacture and how lenient they are on the warranty. Most of them, including sony i believe, will let you change the harddrive without voiding the warranty

They wouldn't know anyway. If you have to send it to them, just put in the old hard drive.

I mean... even if they ask you if you changed the hard drive, you could always.... lie.

Looks like SATA/600 is needed, 260MB/s seems to be the max for the SATA/300 spec after overhead. Too bad Intel doesn't increase their sequential writes, I wonder if the controller btw the SLC and MLC models is any difference since Anandtech implies that they are the same. Also, I wonder when stores will have the X18-M Gen2 in stock.

Looks really good. I can live with slower writes so low write speed compared to current SSDs doesnt affect me.

80 MB/s sequential writes are completely inconsequential to me, I'm going to be doing very few large sequential writes. The important thing to note here is that Intel added nearly 40% to 4K write speed and doubled 4K read speed. This means perceptually, it'll be noticeably faster than a G1 drive, which is already noticeably faster than an Indilinx or Samsung drive.

hah, anandtech supports me. the summit got completely owned by the intel. at random writes, that is :) at random reads, it isn't well, as well.

and from my experience, those are all that matter.

and i love to see the raptor not only owned, but very hard, at random reads :)

can't wait for the full review :) hope they integrate a kingston -v, too.

    reading further :)

im a little confused about trim support in w7. I know this is a basic question, but if I get the G2 and run W7 RC, is there a TRIM command I have to run? or will it just run automatically?

Also, if I plan on reinstalling OSes on the SSD a few times, will that really hurt the lifespan of the drive?

BTW, 320GB drives by next year along with a faster controller.

They said something in the line of:

"The current drives are about lowering price and updating the line. Next update of 34nm will bring greater capacity and more performance."

It will run automatically - it is (or will be) built into Windows 7 (final). I think the manual TRIM comes in for Vista and XP users, since those do not have TRIM support built in. So, the drive will need to be TRIMmed manually.

If it is MLC, then technically, yes... But I don't think you will have anything to worry about for years to come. You'll most likely upgrade before it dies on you.

it will happen automatically. you don't happen to send sata commands all the time manually, do you? :) if you delete, or resize to smaller a file, then a trim will get sent for the now-unused space.

the lifespan of the drive is of no concern for you. that's overhyped panic of the blogosphere, and all the ones that need justification for not having yet spend the money on an ssd. don't listen to them, your drive will be fine.

Even while it's an addon application, I don't think one has to invoke it manually. I bet it installs as a driver, or service, and just catches all File.Delete and other similar commands, sending additional trims down the line, then.

windows 7 went RTM, so, if you download 7600.16385, you actually have the final product that should support TRIM ;)

Naw, it should be fine. You are just reinstalling the OS not doing clean sweep via wipe utility. Doing a wipe utility every time you format might impact the lifespan. Even that's only 1 cycle but, wipe utility means guaranteed cycle reduction across the WHOLE drive.

    no i am not.

i don't plan to buy it btw. i would like to. that's something else.

i plan to buy the 2.5" version for the media center and the studio pc, though. the intel really are that good, you don't want anything else at any point in time anymore :)

only one real one, and even that is only gen1...

    lets see..
    samsung 128gb, samsung new, 64gb
    mtron mobi 32gb
    mtron mobi 2x 64gb
    intel 160gb

theoretically one for 128gb for the asus eee, but it doesn't work
another very old 64gb samsung with terrible jmicron behaviour (and 20mb/s speed woah :)).

    why?

    :)

just noticed i only have 2 hdd's in use right now.

so.. maybe i am.. NO I AM NOT ADDICTED :)
