Man, what is with all the I've-never-even-heard-of-that-brand SSDs these days... You're talking about the G-Monster V2, right? From the cost and specs it looks like a re-branded Apex. I don't think anyone has actually gotten their hands on an Apex yet.

Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?

Ooops...sry!
-
I know this is notebookreview and the ssd thread but bestbuy has 300gb velociraptor for $200 and I thought you folks might wanna know about it.

it seems a shame to me that the 64gb apex has a lower write speed. Still waiting for the vertex to be available.
-
GET OUT OF HERE WITH THAT HERESY!
and how do i fit that into my notebook again??? -
Unscrew large heatsink, insert in laptop, pack with dry ice to keep from melting laptop. Oh yeah and figure out where to get 12V since SATA laptops generally don't provide a 12v line.
-
supermediastore.com has them in stock.
-
so the drive is in a 2.5" form factor, just has a massive heatsink?
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
It's actually taller than your typical 2.5" drive. Standard server/enterprise size; I think it's basically a modified server drive anyways. Just like that one 500GB 2.5" that was taller than your typical 2.5" drive that someone released like a year ago.
-
Yeah, I don't know about the power thing. I've never heard of anyone putting one in a laptop. I don't think they are rated for the shock resistance necessary for a notebook either.
-
Yep. As has been said its taller, and requires 12v that most laptops don't support, and isn't designed for laptop use at all really. I'm actually surprised there isn't a ridiculous DTR model out there custom built to take it though. Also removing the heatsink voids the waranty.
-
yeah trust me i'm not gonna try. i just thought it sounded a little intesting...
-
Speaking of VelociRaptors, they're pretty fast especially if you keep them defragmented... of course I have mine in my desktop.
I just defragmented mine using the free JkDefrag program (and "-a 7" parameters) at http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/
It should hold me over until the new Samsungs 128GB are more available and in my price range, even though I am wanting one pretty bad... hehehe -
DOH! i got excited for half a second when i found this pdf... turns out to be a page of nothing... i put an email in at newegg asking about the filemate drives. i'll let you guys know what they say
-
maybe if you didn't "waste" your money on the VelociRaptor they would be in your price range...
-
newegg says they garauntee there specs are acurate but cannot tell me what controler is used and i have to contact filemate for that. So i'm emailing filemate...
-
quick question, for raid 0 , do both drives have to be exact same size..?
-
Technically no, but it's generally not advisable to use unmatched drives for RAID arrays.
-
thanks.. i already have 2 320gb hd's in raid0.. but was just checking out the price drop in the x25-e's... and the apex has now been made available here in greece..
-
Err...you were thinking of adding an SSD to your current RAID array?
-
I bought the VelociRaptor months ago... it was a significant improvement in power, heat, speed, and size over my previous Raptor drive. Next step is SSD when it "meets my specs". I am closely watching.
-
nope .. replacing.... been looking at this thread and drives for the last 2 months... so much has changed / evolved.. can't wait to get my hands on 2 raided ssd's.. just waiting to descide on the right ones..
-
Ahh..you had me worried!
I can't imagine two such disparate devices RAIDing well (If at all!).
Hope I didn't insult your intelligence.
It would be an interesting experiment though. -
Not that anyone seems to care about IDE any more, but I see that Transcend recently introduced a 128GB IDE SSD, their company store has it for $421. Their data sheet only lists specs up to 32GB tho, so no real info on it yet.
[edit: This press release says 145MB/sec read 92MB/sec write.
http://www.techshout.com/hardware/2...igh-speed-25-inch-ssds-get-launched-in-india/ ]
And PhotoFast seems to be releasing a 128GB IDE SSD as well, but so far I've only seen it on a Japanese web site for $535 preorder.

This is about the size I'd go for to install in my old Asus M6Ne (which I'm discovering I still need to use from time to time when I need to test my software on a single-core machine). -
Oh yeah, I remember IDE, my grandfather used to talk about it, and ISA and something called a floppy disk.
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Hey, I'm still using a machine with an IDE drive, and my dad's office computer still has an ISA slot
I'm actually semi-interested in seeing a small Samsung or Mtron SLC IDE 32GB, 16GB, or even 8GB; I don't really trust the Transcend and RiDATA MLC drives floating around. Then again, I'll probably be upgrading to an XT2 sometime this year, so maybe not...
It's nice to have the option to upgrade old technology though. Specially when it's actually a significant upgrade, unlike bumping up to a 500MHz faster Pentium 4... -
I'd also put one IDE SSD like this on my old laptop. It's a P4 on 2.66GHz with 1GB RAM and ATI Radeon 345M or something like that. It's still a nice laptop for internet and office work.

Another price drop on Intel MLC drives: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2013240636 50001157&name=Intel

but still not enough for mainstream..sadly. -

intel has a nice drop-speed
maybe we should measure that, too
(i'm talking about price, for who ever doesn't get it
)
-
Say, I recently bought my father a Dell from the outlet, and it has a 64GB SSD in it. What would be the easiest way for me to find out if this is the SLC or MLC version?
-
Commander Wolf can i haz broadwell?
Take out the drive, look at the model number, and plug it into Google.
Then do some benchmarks for the rest of us
-
Happy to do benchmarks, I don't think my dad would take kindly to me opening up his laptop, though. Do any of the benchmarks automatically detect the model? I'll be going up to meet him on Saturday, so I'll have a look then.
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
possibly you see it in the device manager.
-
Doh, but that's too obvious.
-
Newegg is a bunch of JOKERS! they emailed me saying their specs on filemate were accurate, somthing like 230mb/s read and 110mb/s write. NOW LOOK AT THE SPECS!
-
You looked at the wrong drive. There are several drive models. The 220/220 one is still up.
-
no i didn't look at the wrong drive. the other two had reads of like 220 or 230 also and now since i contacted them about it and contacted the manufacturer they lowered them this morning or last night
-
which is more of what i thought i was pretty impressed the the specs/price before they fixed it. hell even if it stuttered i woulda picked up a 128gb for a storage drive at $230ish and baught and Mtron 32gb for OS
-
Oh, I didn't realize you were talking about the other drives. Those FileMates look fishy to me. I've been following SSD news for a while, and I never heard them mentioned. And their websites don't have near enough information to be a technological product manufacturer.
-
yeah i questioned newegg about them and they sent me to the manufacturer regarding the controler and the wintech gave me a case number and log in but so far all i got from them was a confirmation they recieved my email...
Also i see the 64gb for 119$ are sold out now. i'm sure they will get a lot of RMA's with the specs lowered by half... -
i'm hoping intel will soon be $300 or at least below $350 and i may be able to swing it!
-

It's probably yet another OCZ/GSkill/JMicron re-brand (as these no-name drives tend to be). Whether Wintec has added their own "tweaks" and whether those "tweaks", if applied, actually work is probably debatable. As even the Titan and its dual JMicrons (albeit monstrous sequential speeds) still fall behind Samsung and Mtron in random writes, I'd still be wary of these kind of drives.
You pay $200 for an SLC 32GB Samsung or Mtron. That's my baseline. If you're paying less per GB, it's still probably a sign of a poorly designed drive (of course, Intel X25-M and even Samsung 128GB MLC are pushing this baseline, but just my two cents here XD). -
I wish the Corsair was cheaper ... still at $327.
And BTW - I think OCZ must be braindead ... the g.skill titan is the same drive as the Apex ... and look at the price difference. -
well it is 15% slower on reads than the APEX i'll have to check out the price %...
edit: titan 128gb 349.99 apex 120gb 379.99 that's only and ~8.5% increase... i'd call it justifyable
edit 2: just saw there is a 20$ MIR for the apex 359.99 only 2.9% price increase! U'D BE BRAIN DEAD TO CHOOSE THE TITAN just looking at price and specs, anyway... -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
anyone would be brain dead to buy some of those cheap mlc devices. till now, each one got proven buggy.
-
Hey, kind of new to this market, why are all SSD's listed on NewEgg 2.5"?
-
True but these newer MLC's have incredable read speeds compared to the SLC's am i right in assume that would mean faster load times? or will the slightly faster seek times of the SLC's be more of an improvement?
-
-
well somebody woke up on the grumpy side of the bed this morning
edit: you forgot the 20$ MIR for apex btw
