umm as far as supertalent i know they advertise it at max. they didnt use hd tune to bench it tho.. some other program. and as for most manufactures out there im 99% sure they advertise max as well.
keyword is advertised. review sites will put the actual rates that really matters which is the average.
also speed can vary depending on the chipset batch that the manufactures get. obviously not all ram will perform exactly the same even tho its the same model and not all GPU achieve the same bench numbers as the model next to it.

I agree. Every ssd that I have read about describes average speeds and its the same with all reviews I have read. Max speed is the wrong description as it is not the max speed whatsoever, but rather a peak speed that is reached. It can be elevated for any number of reasons resulting in a false positive.
I know some may not like the sound of this but it is reality, otherwise industry would be jumping all over the SATA II I reviewed and got a peak of something like 192MB/s from.
Can you imagine? -
well i know that review sites do post the avg speeds, but from my sources, its the avg peak speed result that is advertised. over hundreds of peak speed benchmarks, they take the average of that when they advertise the product. so on a supertalent MX, the average peak speed is 120 read. but the average is 100-110 is what they have told me. can vary on the chipset batch and the system setup.
-
Any good review site will show you minimum, maximum and average and tell you that the best point of comparison is average data rate. They won't just pull maximums and say it performs as X. -
THis isn't any different than the burst rate of a mechanical drive. -
I am going to buy a mydigitalssd from http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/Ca...:MyDigitalSSD+IDE+SSD+Solid+State+Disk+Drives
very soon.
I'm just wondering should I go for a 16gb mlc 120/30 (read/write) for $120 or an 8gb slc 130/70 for $160? What would be the difference in boot times/ performance etc... between the two, but also compared with a 7200rpm hd?
thanks -
MAybe not this thread.... but if you check my posts on various SSD threads... you will see... "I told you so"...
http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=11934
Seagate and WD, etc will be all over SSD's as soon as it suits them. Dave -
I got a Extreme Performance (RAID 0)-128GB (64GB x 2) Solid State Drive on my new Alienware m17x and can't wait to see what it can do for myself!
-
Holy f**k wow, RAID 0 on two 64 GB SSDs? Wow let's see your HD Tune.
-
Mtron seems to be releasing their new 1000 series.
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
the prices are awesome (from what i've seen on http://shg.dk/). similar to the super talent pricing. finally a replacement for my zif-drive.
-
The pricing seems to be quite the same in France, less than €400 for the 1000 series, 64GB, zif.
Mydigitaldiscount has listed them too, the above cited is sold $478 by them...
Time to call some US friends
Btw, i'm waiting exactly for the same thing -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
i just hope they release the 128gb at the same time. below 1000$, and i'm in

I've come across something that I thought was too good to be true. SuperTalent's 120GB SATA for under $700?
Something must be gonzo here. Only things wrong that I can tell, after sifting through pages of tech specs, are that it's only MLC flash and the (listed) write speed is slower than some of the "gold standards" in the OP. Is SuperTalent a subpar brand or something? Is this drive utter crap? Or is this actually an amazing deal on a decent SSD? How does it compare to other SSD's? I notice Newegg is not the only one with the $630-650 price range either so it's not a pricing goof or special. MSRP is like $650.
What amazes me is not the tech specs, it's that it's "only" half the price of all the laptops I've been looking to buy for school. Some of the SSD's (presumably the best quality ones) have been like the same price to almost double... for 64 GB or soon-to-be-released 120GB drives.

-
Im sorry. I managed to only read the OP and not the rest of the thread
.Regardless, I'm glad the drive is petty respectable and puts an SSD in the way way way nearly but not quite out of my price range. The numbers dont look bad at all.
-
I have the the Supertalent 120 gb SSD and it's a pretty good drive.
-
Les, i must say...i am fairly new to this forum and i just took the time to read this and a couple other of ur threads on the new SSD technology...And all i can say is that ur a *Bleeping* Blessing to have here on this forum. Your entire experience with what you went through with Dell, and for you to share it with us ...all this info. is unsurpassed. I never even heard of this tech. til' now at the begining of June 2008 because of you. I am now definetly highly interested in this SSD technology for my next laptop that i plan to purchase in the next couple months... but my gosh what the hell is going on with those prices.
. It is maaad expensive...and i am greedy, i will want at least a 200GB drive...so thats the only issue for me...the cost of the darn thing...but nevertheless i am honestly interested and tks for sharing your experiences.
Definite Rep!

In my NC8430 I had a Hitachi 100 gb 5400 RPM drive in there and this drive is the one it replaced. It boots into windows(I'm using XP SP3) in about 15 seconds. I'm sure this drive will fly on Vista. When I bought it I paid 649.00 for it but now newegg is selling it for 639.00. John here are the Hdtune results for the drive in this thread I made: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=249734.
It's not as fast as a slc drive but it's much faster than the 5400 rpm drive I replaced. -
-
Jedi:
Thanks. For comparison purposes, I've attached my HDTune benchmarks for the Hitachi Travelstar 100 (1 gen old 100GB/7200RPM)... Looks like it's a winner for writes across the board and very comparable for most reads.
-
Does enabling write cache makes a difference for SSD?
-
U cannot enable write cache if your system is running in AHCI mode.
-
Hey Les, I think I recall seeing (not sure if it was from you) but do you know if the recent Lenovo's have the new Samsung SATAII SSDs?
-
Im not sure but did u get in o the price error promotion where the ssd cost next to nothing?
http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=598975 -
I did. It was posted here as well. I don't know anyone who got a successful order. Mine was canceled.
-
My primary disk got corrupted so I installed the Super Talent 128GB multicell as the primary. The system response for many things is much quicker than the Hitachi 200GB 7200 perpendicular.
If this works out well then I will surely get an SSD in my next laptop. -
Hello everyone - new to the site. I recently purchased an HP 2710p and am looking to install a 1.8 SSD. After some research I have narrowed down my options to the following three Mtron drives. I'd appreciate any input.
Mtron 1.8" 32GB PATA SLC MSD 3000 - Aluminum
Read: 100MB/sec
Write: 80MB/sec
Price: $449
Mtron 1.8" 64GB PATA MLC MSD 1000 - Aluminum
Read: 100MB/sec
Write: 40MB/sec
Price: $478
Mtron 1.8" 64GB PATA SLC MSD 3000 - Aluminum
Read: 100MB/sec
Write: 80MB/sec
Price: $799
My biggest question is whether the drop from a write speed of 80 to a write speed of 40 is drastic enough to purchase a 32GB instead of a 64GB. I will be running Vista.
Thanks! -

But mostly, I wanted to be on the save side, and not order something that gets dropped later -
Do you have an estimated time before shipping for your SSD ? Were the 3000 series in stock or available ?
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
They talked about two weeks or so, but we'll see if that's true. I ordered nearly a week ago. Would be nice to get it friday in a week, hehe. I'd have holidays afterwards. Allways great to have something to play by then
-
Dave:
Where are you getting these prices from, DVNation? -
I imagine both are able to ship within the next couple of days. The prices are from mydigitaldiscount.com
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
jup, ordered it from mydigitaldiscount.com
bad news from a completely other side. my hp just ****ed up, well, it can't run on battery anymore. but it isn't the battery (just got replaced). wellwell... still good enough to test out the mtron, but anywayswould love to have a full working system. looks like i'll have to send it in.
-
Thats unfortunate to hear. I should be getting my 2710p in a couple of days.
Random question to davepermen:
Are you running 64bit Vista? Also how does it work when switching the hard drive from stock to ssd? What should I do first?
Thanks! -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
nope, running 32bit vista. i'm a dj, and i don't think my hardware and software runs in 64bit native anyways
(else, i'd be on 64bit since some while for sure).
uhm.. same as every harddrive change? take out the screws, get to the hd, plug it out, plug the new in, put the screws back, and start up.
if you don't want to reinstall, first, you should make an imageand then play that one back.
have fun with your 2710p. it's awesome. -
Yep, great machine
I'm curious about the time Vista will take to reinstall.
For your drive, try to get some extra pads. The antishock blue rubber is only adapted to the original HDD, I had some trouble with my former Sandisk SSD. -
Great, thanks a lot for the help! I can't wait for it to get here!

Ok, this may be a fairly stupid question, but bear with me.
I've been looking over the assorted IDE/SATA - Flash adapters, and I've noticed something puzzling.
Size is an issue. No doubt there; particularly given lappies, we've got limited space to work with.
So, why do they all use Compact Flash cards? Those things are enormous. Why not use the wee little cards, like SD cards? I could fit a couple dozen SD cards into the space my HD takes up. -
Because sd cards are way to slow for this sort of purpose, and have NO wear levelling implemented in the design. Of course, there are ide/sata to sd adapters out there, they're just not really popular.
-
Can we move the sd card conversation to sd card threads of which there are many here, some specifically dealing with this.
Thank you. This has become a great thread for many and I am hoping to keep it on track, nothing personal. -
I agree with Les.
This question is to you Les:
Is it a good time to buy a Mtron 1.8" 32GB PATA IDE MOBI SSD SLC MSD 3000 for $450 or can I expect the drive to come down further in price within the next two months?
Thanks! -
The price will come down in a few months...but it always does. By that theory, if a computer buyer were to wait, he would never get a computer because there will always be a better system with a better price a few months down the road.
My guess is that you will probably be price safe for the next 4-6 months very least. -
I would like to point out this sweetheart of a deal... I am oh so close...

Good price, $50 cheaper than the OCZ and Mtron MOBI 3000 with the same speed and size.
-
It is $550 even on EBAY!
-
Great price! Too bad I need a 1.8 ssd for my HP 2710p.
