Windows 7, USB 3.0, SATA 3.0 (mostly important for SSD fans), and Nehalem within 6 months of each other. If there were ever a more perfect time, I'd like to see it.

Its now or never, if you need it get it if you dont dont.

SSD and W7 can be put on later easily and the others wont be widely opted that quick (as in time to get a second notebook).

I'll just say now, if you wait, you'll just continue on waiting due to technology changing too often.

I don't agree with you at all in this case, surely you're willing to concede that that while new technology is always around the corner, it doesn't come out at a steady, rhythmic pace. Meaning that some years not much new stuff comes out, and other years more new stuff comes out, and thus some years are better than others. New specifications for major things like USB and SATA certainly don't come along every year, and neither do new versions of Windows. For them to all be coming within 6 months of one another is quite nice, coupled with a new CPU platform as well. New CPUs are always around the corner, so I'll happily concede that portion of this to you.

Windows usually ocmes around every 2-3 years(XP was the exception), so yes, I'd say new versions of Windows are pretty much regular and "around the corner". Heck, I already started seeing rumors and threads about Windows 8...

Well they're not at the same time, so I don't really see your point... Sure they're certain gap of each other so if you wait for the last thing to come out, you'll have found the "best" time for that interval of technology.

Mind you, I don't think it's necessarily the best time to buy. New technology is usually quite expensive(see SSD prices when they came out) and for me(and quite a portion of the population), the "best" time to buy is when the price is right for what you're getting. If anything, it'd be the best time to buy simply because older stock technology will suffer a noticeable drop in price.

Rule of thumb for the economic buyer(not the enthusiast): Buy bleeding tech, not cutting edge tech.

Well yea, only USB, SATA, and the Operating System don't change so often, but if you want performance and want to wait, it really means you won't ever get one since the performance parts (CPU, graphic cards, RAM, etc) keeps on changing. As in for SSD, it isn't really necessary, not enough storage for most users most likely. It only has performance, but for the price, even thought it did drop by a lot, it still isn't worth it. If it comes with the PC, sure why not get it, but you're basically paying the extra money still.

I don't think we will see USB 3.0, SATA 3.0, or the first OLED screens in notebooks for another year or so.

But I need to upgrade soon, and Nehalem, Windows 7, SSDs, and LED backlighting are enough to motivate me in the coming months.

USB 3.0 will not be in notebooks anytime soon.

no, you need to wait untill Windows 14, USB 7.0, and SupaSATA 8.0 ... which are all up for Q4 2027.

... or in other words, it will never be the perfect time, simply because that perfect time doesn't exist. If you need a laptop, go buy one from whatever is available.

    that about sums it up

Them being released doesnt mean they will be in a package you want. Just because USB 3.0 is out in the next few months, that doesnt mean it will be offered by manus right when it will be released. The same goes for everything else.

I agree that the best time to buy is when you need to.

However, if you know for sure that a major new upgrade is just a short time away, there's nothing wrong with waiting for it if you choose to. Its always nice to get something the minute it comes out, so it will be 'current' for longer.
