As some of you already know, Thermal Grizzly announced a new thermal interface material, called Carbonaut, which is not a paste but like a thin sheet of carbon material, very similar to IC Graphite pads. Here's a latest review of Carbonaut using AMD CPU:

From the initial tests it looks like it performs very well, just as good as paste like MX-4, and unlike the paste it will not pump out or dry out. Seems like a great tool for custom laptop resellers who might have a need to test systems before sending them out (this will save them money since they can reuse pads multiple times) and also a good option for resellers to offer their customers since there's no chance it will leak during shipping (from all the kicking and throwing the shipping company will do to your packages).

Personally I would really like to try one of these since it seem to fit the "moving laptop around" usage better than paste (no chance of this pad pumping out or leaking) and should last longer than anything like LM. Before buying (it's not even available here in US yet) I'd like to see a few more tests and I'd appreciate if any of you will post your results after you'll manage to buy one of them.

The problem with products like this is that they are ridiculously sensitive to mounting pressure. A bad mounting system or a bad mount will cause it to be wildly inconsistent

I agree, but this one seem to be thicker than IC Graphite pad so it should be less sensitive. Of course, it would be interesting to see the actual results on notebooks first.

Exactly. Safer to wait for a proper review and test before jumping aboard the hype train.

    EDIT: "Proper" means system specific

With this pad nothing of the copper will have direct contacts with the die/IHS. No thanks.

I will try this on my 13 R3 since it is due for a repaste.

Big believer in the graphite pads, I'll be interesting to see how this one does but the s-PGS Panasonic pads are legit and I've since swapped over to it for everything IC related.

Both for the same reason I liked the MacBook concept, the fewer moving parts and points of failure something has the better. PGS lasts indefinitely which is why its primary use is in industrial rectifiers / machinery.

Does mounting pressure effect the cooling of the pad, and in how much is it comparable to a LM repaste. You've got my atention. I've googled a bit but there ain't much hands on info about the PGS. Price seems decent though.
