Sorry, but being new to the laptop world I didn't know where else to post this question.
In general, are the thicker, larger profile laptops easier to keep cool as well as doing some mods? I have been looking at laptops in the usual mass market places and it seems to me that the Toshiba satellite looks thicker than most of the others such as HP, Dell etc.
Any thoughts on this?

Generally larger laptops are easier to keep cool because they have more area to dissipate the heat with, but what kinds of mods are you talking about? Like drilling hole in your laptop or simply painting it?

It really depends... But i definitely wouldn't go for Toshiba if I was looking for a cool laptop)

In general, given a same or similar set of components, it will be easier to keep a larger chassis cool. Of course, it also depends largely on what you do with the extra space: if there's just a bunch of air or plastic, you may not see much of an improvement in cooling, but if there's an extra fan or a larger heat sink, you may see a significant improvement in cooling.
In general, manufactures tend to put cooler parts in smaller chassis and hotter parts in larger chassis, so ultimately you end up getting the same temps across all different flavors of chassis. Of course, there are the oddballs like the overheating Alienwares and whatnot... -
I am thinking maybe painting. Haven't done much thinking about it. Wish I could have the same neon blue glow I have in my desktop but nothing invasive like drilling. -

Painting honestly isn't going to affect thermal performance much. Plastic is already a crappy enough heat sink as it is.

If you want a cool running system, get a dell. Many of their systems support Christian Diefer's I8kfangui, which is a fan control program. I would look into their systems, which support fan control. A cooler running system will last longer.
As the others mentioned, I would stray away from Toshiba, they are a extreme pain in the ass to take apart, and they generally run hotter.
