I bought a w510 with i7 720QM processor but want to upgrade to i7 920XM processor. I bought the processor and installed it in the socket but it won't light up the screen. Buttons just blink. What do I need to do?

Does the old CPU work?
-
Yes, I'm replying on the w510 with the original processor. It's a great computer but rendering cad models pegs the processor so I wanted a faster one.
-
Well, I'd if the old one works and the i7 920XM is supported by the W510, the most likely answer would seem to be the CPU is defective. You're running the latest BIOS?
-
Not sure on latest BIOS. All drivers are latest. I'm new to Win7 and don't know how to get to BIOS to see what is there. 920XM is an option to w510.
-
You can download it from Lenovo site.
-
I don't have the latest BIOS. Will update now and try the processor again.
-
Updating the BIOS worked! Computer boots quicker. Test render is faster, too. Thank you.
I saved BIG money buying processor on ebay and still have the i7 720GM processor to sell. -
You might want to hang on to the older CPU until your warranty runs out. Upgrading the CPU does void your warranty. Lenovo can make an issue of it if they choose to do so.
-
how much did u pay for ur 920XM? Also usually , when updating the processor and it not working , old BIOS is the problem.
-
Paid $550 for processor. Saved hundreds.
-
lol where? PM me... or post here.

I found the processor on ebay. After settling in, it is really faster. I'm very happy. Item # 130371779138. They have more.
