I just want to know if there is a 1.8 inch ssd available out there thats comparable with the stock unit (samsung) but with larger size. Also I want to know where to get it

I am thinking to upgrade my HDD since 64gb is a bit too small

    any info is appreciated

There is a 1.8" 128GB Samsung SLC out there and I do believe it's actually a little bit faster than the stock SSD (at the very least, the quoted speeds are faster than the stock drive in the only X300 I've used). For a 128GB SLC it doesn't seem that expensive either.

You might want to consider a 32GB SDHC or something along those lines if you're just looking to increase storage, though.

That's wrong, the Samsung 128GB SSD is MLC. It is also slower than the stock X300 SSD. There is no Samsung 128GB SSD that is made of SLC.

Oops, you're right. It is MLC. But the quote read/write speeds (and I never said anything about the effective speeds) are still slower than the drive in the X300 I used.

so, that is the only choice I have as far as upgrading the HDD. for around 250 is not too bad assuming I can sell my 64gb.

Do you think it is worth it?

Quoted speeds are actually slower as well, for the SLC it's 100MB/sec read and 80MB/sec write, while the MLC its' 90MB/sec read and 70MB/sec write.

The speed is a little bit slower, but the increase in capacity is worth it.

If you got the x300 a long time ago (before October 2008), then it will almost certainly be SLC. However, if it is newer it may be MLC. I suggest you pull the drive and Google the part numbers.

You have very few options. The x300 uses a 1.8" drive or SSD. 1.8" drives are much smaller (the 250GB drive you listed is a 2 platter 2.5" drive). Additionally, 1.8" hard drives tend to be single platter and very slow. The only thing you can get is a 1.8" HDD or 1.8" SSD (current max is 128GB MLC).

Additionally, I would not recommend changing your drive because the 64GB Samsung SLC that came with the x300 is one of (if not the best) SSD drives available. Almost any other drive will be a step back in performance.

That is a great idea, unfortunately it is not possible on the x300. The x300 has 3 USB ports (you could use a flash drive), but no SDHC or ExpressCard reader, so embedding flash storage in the system is not possible.

I suggest you stick with the 64GB SSD, and try one of the following.

Reduce the size of your Windows Install:

    • Perform a clean install with vLite if possible.
    • Create recovery media and delete the hidden partition
    • Disable Hibernate (this will free up a space on your drive equal to your RAM)
    • Adjust your pagefile (try a small static file)
    • Turn off system Restore (default is 10% of drive)
    • Delete Temporary internet files and reduce the maximum size in the future.
    • Uninstall unneeded applications and/or ThinkVantage software.

Offload your data to somewhere else
    • Purchase a large (16GB+) flash drive. Use this to store your videos, music, etc.
    • Buy an external hard drive.
    • Archive files to CD/DVD
    • Map a folder on another computer (with a large physical drive) as a network share and access files/folders over your home network.

These are your best options at present. In the near future (<12 months) you should see a good quality 1.8" SSD at 256GB+, but right now the only option is a 128GB MLC SSD of reduced quality.
