    HP ZV5000
    P4, 3.06GHz, 1GB RAM

Cooling system is clean, yet it runs quite hot and has occasionally shut down.

I installed Speedfan, which shows 0RPM fans, yet 102degC CPU temps.
I selected "Configure" and dropped temp to 36degC, thinking that lower threshold would turn the fans on - but no.
Where is a forum showing how to use Speedfan to take control of those fans?

speedfan doesnt work with every laptop. maybe it is doing more harm then good for you. on my girlfriends dell speedfan disaples the fan and it never turns on.
If i where you i would replay the paste between cpu and cooler. the P4 always runs hot and the paste breaks after a while.

The fans and air path were cleaned about two hours before I posted...

Is Everest (??) another choice to do about the same thing?

I didnt mean the fans or airpath. I ment the thermal paste between the CPU and the cooler. It needs replacing too.
What happens with the fan if you turn speedfan and so on off? Does it start up and cool the CPU alright? If it doesnt then i think you have a hardware problem.
Speed fan and NHC have fan controls of some sort. Mostly messing with the ACPI. Everest can show you the fan data but I dont think it can change it. I cant tell you if any of them will work for you since they need to be competible with your notebooks mainboard to work right.

If your fan stops, you have a problem. Does it run if you stop messing with SpeedFan?

Sounds to me like your fan might just be broken.
