    do batteries make noises?

im trying to figure out what this high pitched noise is...its not a c2d whine, i am pretty sure its the fan on the bottom (makes no sense, i know), but someone suggested it could be the battery and i cant tell.

    thanks!

Highly unlikely. I haven’t heard a notebook battery making any noises before, nor have heard anyone complain about it. But I’ve heard AA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries (or the charger) make a noise while charging.

If you are not sure, then take out the battery, run with the main power and check, simple ;) . It is most likely the FAN, CPU or the HDD.

I know my dv7 makes an annoying alternating noise when in sleep mode it changes tone when the little light on the front comes on. You can only hear it in a perfectly silent room though.

i can hear the HDD clicking sometimes, but its a high pitched noise that is alleviated when i elevate the laptop. i could only figure that its because the fan is FLUSH with the surface it is touching since there is no guard. i looked at my roommates HP laptop and that one has like...a little extension off the bottom so that the fan doesnt touch the surface of whatever it is on.

If the noise is alleviated when you lift up the machine (without tilting it). it should be the fan noise

    yeah i figured. so annoying.

    anyway, heres another question...

this is my third (!) one of these computers, and this one has a different problem. the front right of the case isnt completely flush...its like they didnt glue the front right properly, so when i rest my hand on it or touch it i can hear the top touching the bottom. im scared itll spread to the other side. would you return it based on that?

well, ill probably return it anyway because of the fan noise heh.

Didn't you just try to remove the battery while having the AC-adapter plugged in to see if it is the battery doin any sound? :p

It sounds like you're expecting the notebook to be of the highest quality there is other than it actually is :)

Don't some laptops have internal inverters to convert the power input to the various voltages required by the laptop? I have seen many cases of such devices "whining" due to circuit activity with the ac parts of the system...transformer or coil hysteresis or something. The sound would tend to get louder as more current is drawn from the battery which would make the charger circuitry work harder...just a SWAG.

well, it doesnt seem to differ between battery or non battery or whatever i am doing. im almost positive it is the stupid placement of the fan...maybe the fan is getting too close to the fan guard when it is against a surface? i dunno. i wish this wouldve came with an extended battery so i could just avoid it lol...better airflow.
