    Anandtech is the coolest!

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2808

    Summary:
"General application performance can improve a bit by switching to Core 2 Duo, but the biggest performance gains are associated with 3D rendering and media encoding tasks."

"Owners of Core Duo laptops really have no reason to worry about upgrading for now, and waiting for the Santa Rosa platform before your next laptop upgrade seems reasonable."

Considering the review focuses mostly on the high end, for users like me that bought the low end Yonah (1.66GHz), a high end Merom upgrade would obviously be a much more explosive upgrade...

Ooh, interesting. I have to admit, I wasn't convinced Core 2 could match the battery life of its predecessors, but looks fine... Impressive.

And soon the "should I wait for Core2Duo threads will stop YAY! lol. At least many Yonah notebooks wont be obsolete and can be upgraded.

It's really tempting to sell my laptop now and then wait for a socket-P setup with DX10 graphics...

anandtech reviews are great. You get to see all the stats. Like I posted elsewhere, Intel seems to be promoting MASSIVE battery life improvements, but this is not at all the case...in fact, there has been no improvement according to the review...

what an excellent and comprehensive review! I reckon the Core Duo 2 CPUs will come down in price rapidly. Intel really has moved at such a rapid pace over the past 6 years. I wonder if a quad core mobile CPU will come out...

Quad core laptop CPU, sure one day in maybe another 1 to 3 years.

There is already Engineering Samples of Quad Core, Core 2 Duos for the desktop, aka Kentsfield already out that select people are testing and posting results of. However actual release of this to the public won't probably be until end of this year at earliest or sometime 2007. (Supposedly the release date got pushed up from Q1 2007 to Q4 2006)

I like the fact core 2 duo offers more power but consumes less battery life.

Lets say an average of 10% increase which doesn't sound much but its like going from a core duo 2Ghz to 2.2Ghz which is not bad...
