Asking because I'm wondering when I should get another one![]()

I have no idea. When it can no longer play modern games at decent settings.
I really wish that laptop GPUs were changeable. It's one feature I like about desktops. Everything can be easily upgraded. But I didn't want a desktop. My last desktop lasted me 3 years and I was fine playing HL2 with an Athlon XP 2500+ processor and a GF 5600 Ultra. The visuals and framerate I got were still decent.
So I'm going to go ahead and guess that it will last me about 3 years. But I'm sure I'll keep it even if I upgrade to a better machine. In 3 years laptop GPUs may be upgradeable and I can keep the next laptop for even longer. -

When I go to college aswell, around 2009.

That is a long time...
What do you suggest I do? -
I end up upgrading about once every 3 years
-
i just started college so thats why i bought mine. i usually buy new desktops because i like them better so i dont think ill be buying another laptop, maybe in a couple years
-
Depends on your needs basically. I got my Asus expecting it to last at least 2 years, but my needs have changed, so I purchased the Macbook one year later.
-
Not sure, but its been putting along fine for the first year, the next few will be interesting. I'll probably still use the V6 as my main, but perhaps get a desktop for gaming, it's kinda of a waste to get a gaming notebook as that will probrably become the main and leave the V6 in dust. But that won't happen, unless I get a S-IPS screen
-
Depends on when I find my current one doesn't fulfill my current needs.
Currently I think probably in 4-5 years assuming my laptop continues to work for that length of time, if it breaks before then (but after the 3 year warranty has run out), then I'll probably buy another one before then, and if I start playing top end games again before then, then I'll get a new one.
I guess the question would be, what's your issue with your current laptop? What requirements do you have for a new laptop (realistic?) -
I don't have an issue with it, it's just not portable... I can't really carry around it and a laptop cooler...
I need a super fast portable number cruncher some time in the next year or two... either dual or quad core... -
Every 2-3 years usually.
I'm a gamer mostly, so when it comes to the point where i'm buying games my machine cant handle thats when i upgrade.
GRAW3 was the catalyst for my new baby. -
Zellio, for doing what? is it some specific thing that is already setup to handle quad-core/multi-cores? I find that while I like my Dual-Core, most software doesn't support it yet, so the majority of the time the only use of the dual-core is the OS itself switching programs to the other core (multi-tasking).

I don't see any need to upgrade my machine for a while; it runs everything I throw at it and is very responsive.
I believe I will upgrade to a new machine in Spring of next year, after Santa Rosa has been released, along with Windows Vista and DirectX 10 for notebooks.
I don't have a set time for upgrading per se; I upgrade when I need to, or when upgrading will be beneficial to me. Right now, it's not beneficial. -
I don't have a set time for upgrading either, but my buying history seems to be set at about every 2 years.
I'll probably be getting in on the generation of hardware that comes after the one being released next year. -

I hope that with a nice Pentium-M upgrade (and 2GB of ram if/when I get Vista) I hope my L100 will last me a while, although more resolution would have been useful.
Oh well. -
I'm hoping to keep mine for the next 3yrs hopefully with a couple of upgrades it should be able to handle most of the stuff I do.
-
i just bought that laptop, so probably in 2 years (Christmas time) i will buy a new one!
-
Normally I go about 3 yrs between purchases. If I had the money I would buy a new one as early as summer 2007. I want 12" laptop for going to class.
-
im hoping to get at least 3-4 years out of mine
-
I'll upgrade the laptop whenever it feels slow or old. I think it'll be quite a while, especially as I have my desktop for the heavier gaming. Thinking my next lappy might be a mac... will have to wait and see how macbooks pan out in a few years...
-
I picked two years, but, knowing me, I'll upgrade to the new model in less than a year.
Maybe. -
If I had the money, it would be every 6 months. I just like them.
-
I bought this in August, and I will use it for another year, year and a half, two years...whenever I feel it's gone too far or it breaks down.
-
i'm planning to keep it for 3 years or so but my E1705 are having some issues with BSOD.. so i'm trying to get rid of it and get another laptop. The ATI X1400 can't play newer games with decent settings, even though the CPU works like a champs. sometimes it's kinda slow when i'm doing photoshop with large files.
-
I'm going to use this one at least 3 years. I hope I can get like 5 years out of it though.
-
My work laptops tend to last about 3 years...so I'm hoping I'll get that out of this laptop.
But as others have said, it will depend on what the future holds. Seeing the Vista specs out there, if things push past 2 GB of RAM, that will be the end of this laptop. -
Typically, every year.
-
I hope this one lasts me until I have a real job, so like 2 years. At that point who knows what my computing needs will be.
I plan on getting a desktop for gaming in the next 6 months though. -
Couple of years. I love my Asus but once I get a full time programming job I can afford to get a sexier lappy.
-
i waited 4 years last time although i borrowed one for a few months.
I wont wait 4 years next time. I will possibly get one a year at this point. -
None of the options listed suit me. I'll probably upgrade this one over the next 12 months (200GB hdd, 2GB ram, T7200) and then pass it off to my brother and buy a new one in eighteen months from now.
-
I was going to get a new one in Jan, but with all of new technologies just around the corner, I'll be waiting for a while 6 to 18 months.
Those of you who recently bought a notebook, when are you gonna get another one?
