My current laptop, which is dying, has 3 usb 3.0 ports and a mini display port, all of which I use when docked. Two usb 3.0 ports are used for a hub and external sound card. One usb 3.0 port is open for various temporary peripherals such as external hd, usb stick, phone, blue-ray drive, etc. The mini display port is for the monitor.

The replacement laptop has only 2 usb-type C/TB3 ports and 1 usb 3.0. What's the best way to re-create my old setup? Preferably, I'd like to avoid an expensive TB 3 dock but can do it if it's the best solution.

All you need are a couple adapters: USB-C to USB-A for your existing hub and USB-C to DisplayPort/mini-DisplayPort for the monitor.

That is true. The thing though is that it went from 4 ports in the old (3 usb 3.0 + mini dp) to 3 (2 TB+1 usb 3 Type c). With no free ports, the the usb 3.0 hub has to be used for mouse, keyboard, and external peripherals such as external HD.

Has anyone had experience with a good usb type c hubs?
