Thunderbolt nvme raid enclosures

I have been looking at NAS's and have seen something new pop up like this:

So my next question is, while that is limited to 4 nvme drives, I am looking for something like that that will take 8, 16, or 32nvme drives so I can have 64TB or 32TB of portable external storage at bus speeds.

I know in the server market, they have rack enclosures that will do this, only those are not really "portable"

 

They say up to 16tb which with 4 slots means 4tb drives, but there are 8tb NVMe drives available (not inexpensive, but available), so does this mean that the 8tb drives are not compatible?
4 x 8tb would be 32tb, I would expect more drives would require even more space for cooling which would reduce portability.

 

I don't understand why would such a device be limited in max capacity, as long as it supports drives over 2TB.

 

Right There are or will be soone TLC 4TB drives and one would expect that 8TB and 16TB drives really are not that far down the road, but if I had a device that supported 16 nvme drives and just toss a second or third cooling fan in it, that would work too.

These are the go to when it comes to multi NVME or high performance data interfaces. Piecing something together into a TB3 / USB4 configuration is right around the corner.

$2500 will get you 15TB of space on a U2 drive
$265 / 4 bay U2 enclosure but this will require SATA power / Different cabling

$1299 for 8TB NVME
$280 for the NVME enclosure says it's limited to 8TB though assuming 4x2TB drives.... Whether or not it will support beyond that such as 4x8TB (32TB) is something you would have to try and see if it does go beyond what they state it supports. Many things support beyond the capacity listed by the OEM.

All comes down to use / budget though as to what's going to work for you @ M17XR42012

@M17XR42012 what's the point of using many m.2 drives instead of couple 2.5, especially if you go sata?

 

My laptop has 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 (20Gbps ) ports on it, even if I don't get 20Gbps , I will get a lot higher than SATA speeds, so in this case it is important.
