So i've had my system for a little under a year now, and am interested in upgrading so where do we buy our processors and vid cards? Outside of ebay, I have no clue. Furthermore, I know the vidcard is an MXM slot, but what's the socket type for my processor. At the time of purchase, I believe there were two more options in upgrading the processor, what's the current fastest processor for my socket type?

    What are your current specs?

Fastest CPU for you would be i7-3940XM. Socket G2 AKA rPGA988B.

That's still a very decent setup. Have you considered overclocking the CPU and GPU? You can squeeze out a lot of performance for free that way.

You can overclock the CPU to 3.9GHz on all 4 cores and up to 4.1GHz on 1 core. All you need is Prema's modded BIOS and Intel XTU software.

i7-3740QM is still a very capable CPU, comparable to desktop i7-3770 (when overclocked).

Yes, I already use XTU to crank the CPU up to 3.9ghz, and i typically use msi afterburner for my gpu as when using XTU on my GPU i tend to get wierd effects in some games, ie, crysis 3, and Witcher 2 will break/turn off my laptop once i try to load a save. The whole reason i spent $1500 on this laptop back in Feb2013 was so that i can upgrade the pross/gpu in a couple of years. Currently Injustice (at ultra settings) is the only game that plays at 60fps, according to fraps, and is the only game rocking anything higher than 40 fps, the only second place, post 2012 game, is Batman:AO at 35fps. Borderlands 2 runs at 50-60fps at ultra.

the cheapest price for CPU are on ebay unless you live in china, you can pick up any i7-3xxxqm/xm CPUs as you wish

the cheapest price for the strongest GPU, which is the GTX780M, however, could be found on this forum if someone decides to put them up for second hand sales, next up would be on ebay, again, followed closely by eurocom and rjtech

you are adviced not to upgrade them just yet however, since maxwell GPU from nvidia and its AMD counterparts are coming in shortly after Q1~2 release of intel's new CPU platform, just wait for another 6 months, especially when theres not much AAA titles to be released in the next 6 months

also, do not get a GTX770M because its kind of affordable now, the GTX675MX is stronger than that, at least when both are overclocked the 675MX gets higher performance than 770M maximium steady overclocks since the 770m is only a rebadged 670MX

i'm useing the XTU to OC my cpu, but should i be useing it for the 657mx as well? i crash at times, and can't find anyone's posts as to what i'm to set the sliders to. furthermore, heh, in witcher 2...any slight overclock w/ XTU just makes the game go insainly fast.

my sig has my overclocks on nvidia inspecter, the search term should be gtx 675mx vbios

P.S. GPU vbios overclocking requires vbios flashing, and this comes with the risk of bricking cards, so do at your own risk and verify the original GPU manufacturer(msi or clevo)

there should also be kepler vbios tuner/patcher, which allows you to add voltage to the card for better stability

P.S. adding voltage to the card risks frying the card when its too high, so do at your own risk, it takes time to know which voltage better suits the card, from what i can tell a small 5% voltage bump is safe and brings stability to the card
