I know this has been asked a hundred times already but I have done some extensive research and still have a question.

I own a Acer Aspire 8930g which has an 9700m gt. I am able to buy an mxm-III type 9800m gtx and seeing all the benchmarks this should really make a difference when it comes to gaming. ;)

I know the 8930g has mxm-III but since acer never released a laptop whit a 9800m I am a little uncertain if this will work.

The 9800m gtx comes from a Sager NP5796.

I also heard that acer uses its own vga bios. Is there anyone who can verify this? I know I can mod the vga bios. I've read the mod guide here but this does not say anything about a certain vendor code or something.

Is it possible to mod the 9800m gtx to be recognised by the 8930g or will it work right out the box?

Thank you for your help.

Another issue you will have to consider is if your current GPU heatsink will fit the 9800M GTX. The cityscape on that card will probably be slightly different meaning you may have to mod the heatsink to fit the new card. If buying a card from another machine make sure that the card has an unlocked vbios or it will be very tricky or perhaps impossible to make it work.

    Thank you for your reply.

From what I've seen the cards are almost identical. It's the memory which is slightly different. But as the new card also includes a heat sink I think that modifying isn't a big deal. So I should ask whether or not the card has a unlocked bios and then it should work?

Yeah. Most certainly ask the seller about the vbios. Are you certain the heatsink that the 9800M GTX comes with will fit in your laptop? Most laptops have their "guts" arranged differently from one another so be careful as it probably won't fit without modification at least.

Also make sure your acer has enough blood running through its veins "power", if it does fit, and the memory is slightly different, you could try a copper sheet mod.

Yupp, as the 9700m from the 8930g has a modular heat sink on the vga card. The heat sink can be separated from the heat pipe and so is the included heat sink from the sager laptop. So I think I can simply exchange the heat pipes.

B.t.w. the seller said it is 9800m gtx with id 0617. With that I think he means bios version right? So that probably means it is unlocked?

If it does not fit at al this should do the trick:
    http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/metaloffcuts_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZ

according the guides found here on the forum.

Also how do I know if it has enough blood running through its veins as they all come with the standard 90w power supply?
