I haven't been able to find much info on the Toshiba drive, I was mostly looking for info in it. The consensus from another thread here seems to be the WD is better than the Seagate, but if someone has found this not to be the case I'm all ears.
Update: decided to try out the Toshiba for you all. I bought it from Newegg, and then pulled it from its external enclosure once I formatted it. Removing it from the external enclosure was fairly simple, and did no damage to it, apart from the scratches to the enclosure, so I could easily pop another drive into the enclosure and it would be good as new.
Formats in Windows 7 32 bit to 596GB. During the tests I had 560GB free, and had installed all of MS Office '07 Small Business, ABBY fine reader, iTunes, Firefox (and a bunch of extensions and greasemonkey scripts), and MS Security Essentials. Running on an MSI 1223 ID2 with a P9500, 3GB RAM, and an Intel 4500 IGP.
Windows 7 32 bit install time: from when I hit next after selection the hard drive partition on which to install, I got to the screen to enter my user name and computer name in 23 minutes and 50 seconds.
Boot time: 45 seconds. First 15 seconds were BIOS, Windows is starting screen popped up at 16 seconds, log in screen popped up at 38 seconds, and I made it to my desktop after it read my fingerprint at 45.

Windows Experience Index gives it a 5.9
Feeling the underside of my laptop where the drive is very firmly secured, it felt very slightly warm during the tests. HD bench said it was at 39C. It doesn't feel noticeably warmer during boot up or other operations (notably transferring files from my old drive to this one). Before putting the drive into my computer I formatted it in the external enclosure that it comes with, and it was extremely silent during the process. I don't notice any vibrations. This is replacing a WD 160GB drive, and it really doesn't seem to be any louder/quieter/hotter/cooler.
If anyone has any more questions, post away!
If there's anything more you'd like to know, post here or PM me.

Simple answer....wait for proper reviews. As of today there are zero legit reviews of these hard drives.
-
Seagate 640GB has been reviewed. Not very impressive.
Based on previous series I expect WD to be the fastest performer, Toshiba will have the best battery life. But I don't know for sure because I have not seen any reviews. -
I suppose I'll be a pioneer and grab the Toshiba. I'll post a full review for you all when it arrives.
-
Finally got around to installing it, Windows 7 32 bit is installing as we speak. Aside from from the installation time, what else would you all like to know that would make a good review?
Update: 23:50 until I got to the screen to enter user name and computer name -
HDtune Pro page 1 and page 2 (IOPS) screenshots and Crystal Disk Mark would be nice.

When you said page 2 (IOPS) did you mean random access? Also, do those big spikes in HDtune look unusual? -
25% CPU usage
Shut down some background processes and don't use your computer while running it.
Yes it's probably on the random accces page. -
Ah, that makes sense, thank you.
I'll redo the benches once I finish loading the rest my stuff onto the drive, that should allow for a more realistic bench anyway. -
Any news on the Samsung 640GB drive?
-
How is the noise, vibration, and heat compared to the previous drive, if you can tell? I'm taking an extended stay in Beijing after new years and I'll need some room.

Updated first post with benchmarks and other info, if anyone has more requests, feel free to post. I'm not so hot with formatting image posts, so sorry about the images not being thumbnails. Also if a mod could please change the thread title to reflect the contents that would be helpful and appreciated.
Edit: thanks to Chucky poo for changing the title for me. -
MK64 59GSX? I thought it was supposed to be called the MK64 65GSX...
http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2009_09/pr0201.htm -
I double checked device manager and it also has MK6459GSX. Weird.
-
Can you post a picture of the drive?

I should have checked before I put the cover back on my computer, sorry it came out blurry. You can still make out MK6459GSX in the upper right, though. -
The screenshots look great. But you still have 25% CPU usage. This means the disk was being accessed by other processes, which means lower results.
Can you redo the benchmarks with lower CPU usage? -
I'm not sure how to get my CPU utilization lower. I ran that test after my computer had been idle for about 20 minutes.
-
Try pressing ctrl-alt -del and see what's eating your CPU. Disable as many processes as possible.
-
Interesting results. Looks like the Seagate 500gb 7200 drive beats this one handily.

People don't buy 5400rpm hard drives over 7200rpm hard drives for the transfer rates, but other measures of performance.
-
Is this a 9.5mm drive or is it thicker? I'm thinking about buying this for my PS3.
-
9.5mm
-
In the process of undervolting my CPU, something I've been meaning to do for a while. I fiddle around and get my CPU usage down and retest tomorrow probably.
-
Killer, I'm pretty sure this is my next ps3 hard drive. I just need to find someone I can borrow one from to make my backup (3 drives needed total). Now the only thing I need to be concerned with is whether I'd rather have an extra 140gb or a 7200rpm drive.
