Good ! Now I can finally get a next gen DVD player.
Toshiba to give up on HD DVD, end format war: source

Yey
Blu-Ray Rocks!!

Not so sure about that. I thought blu-ray discs were mere more prone to damage due to scraches ? -
What I'm wondering is if we'll still see HD-DVD disks for writing data on them. I love the DVD-RAM technology (writing to the disk like a hard drive) and I hope that HD DVD-RAM will still be released, there's nothing like that on the Blu-Ray side.......yet.
I feel bad for all those computers with an HD-DVD drive and potentially becoming useless, I hope they can still release disks for storing data.
Its just ironic how Toshiba and Sony were so against each other in this war but yet Toshiba makes the screens for some of Sony's laptops. -
I feel bad for the HD DVD supporters, but something had to give out at some point. Although, it does give me a good reason to get a PS3 eventually (along with Gran Turismo 5). I'll get one on eBay when GT5 hits for like $150, and go from there.
At this point, I really don't mind that BluRay won, since HD DVD has been dying for quite a while now. I wonder what will happen to the HD DVD exclusives....(Transformers, mainly). -
I don't mind BluRay as a technology, I'm just not a fan of its parent company...
-
I'm personally very happy that the format war is over. And to be honest, I'm pretty happy that Blu-Ray won. I already have a PS3, so now I can start buying movies for it.
-
LOL, that makes no sense whatsoever. Just because a format loses or becomes obsolete doesn't mean those discs stop playing.
-
SpacemanSpiff Everything in Moderation
Yeah, I've had similar concerns. -
Or he's like me, and already has the player, but can now go out and buy the disks.
-
I <3 my Blu-rays. I'm glad this war is over with. Also there is a rumor that an employee of circuit city found Transformers in the circuit city database. On blu-ray of course. Same goes for Blades of Glory.
-
That's my point. You could have bought the discs before the format war was decided, and even if Bluray fell, that doesn't mean the discs are useless. The format war has no impact that.
-
My point was that I wasn't going to go out and start spending lots of money on building up a Blu-Ray library if it was going to lose. HD players are still too expensive, and if Blu-Ray had failed, I wouldn't have ever gotten a BR player, and I'm not going to build up a bunch movies that I can only watch on my PS3, which I don't always have.
-
Yey for Blu-ray , We have a PS3!
(40GB)
-
Well we all knew this was going to happen sooner or later =P
-
Yes.
The information is held much closer to the surface than with HD DVD and DVD. -
But Blu-ray discs have a scratch resistant coating on them so that argument is null.
-
I want to make scratches on a Blu Ray Disc NOW!
I jest. But I think I'll be on the lookout for a 60GB PS3 since it has backwards compatibility with PS2. Or I might just get a white ps2 and be done with. -
Better be fast, they are trimming that line...
-
I picked up my 60GB PS3 a while ago. Love it. Backwards compatibility with PS2 games has been great too.
-
... Uhh, not really, no.
It gets scratched hard enough, it's going to damage the information. And being that it's closer to the surface, it's more likely to damage the information/damage it more-so than on another disc. -
I didn't say it was scratch proof, just that it was scratch resistant. There is a difference.

Look, no offense but I refuse to get into a format war discussion here on this board. If you want to continue to argue this, come over to High Def Digest. -
What "format war discussion"? The whole point of this thread is that the format war is over.
-
Do I need to bring in the fire extinguisher? Cools both Blu and Red
.
-
I'm not looking to argue.
I simply get annoyed when people generalize things. By you saying that the argument was null, you could have been implying the disks weren't going to impervious to scratching.
I could really care less what format is it comes down to, fyi. I simply dislike generalizations. And you never said that was (or was not) scratch proof. Simply that it had a coating to prevent scratches and therefore my argument was null.
=P -
I apologize. I like Blu-ray. I talk about Blu-ray on other boards. And sometimes, people spread false information (I'm willing to bet most of those people do it on purpose) about it and I, like others, feel the need to correct them. I understand you meant no harm and I hope you accept my apology.
-
I really like the DVD-RAM technology and that there was to be HD DVD-RAM discs to come out but looks like thats canceled, there's no equilvalent to that in the Blu-Ray side....yet.
-
No need to apology, I'm just a anti-generalist Nazi.
And it's cool. Yes, there's lots of people who either, 1, don't know about a technology and therefore spread what they think to be correct information when it's actually false, and some who spread it on purpose.
I understand where you're coming from.
Frankly, I don't have a problem with either technology, I just don't like BluRay's creator much.
-
Sony did some shady things, I admit. But I have a Sony HD camcorder and a PS3 and I'm in love with both of them. I also have a PSP which I don't really use but it would be really sweet if I was 12, lol. My nephew thinks so anyway.
I try not to hate companies if I can help it. All they care about is making money. They don't have feelings and they do not care too much about the customer. So I try not to care about them. But if I did I wouldn't be using Windows XP on my PC, soon to be using Windows Vista on my laptop, (whenever Dell sends it to me, /sigh) and if I ever bought an Apple, I'm sure there would be something I didn't like about it by now, hehe. -
Heehee. I know how it is.
I don't think there's a perfect company anyway, really.
I have an iPhone, love it to death, but there's still a few things I'd change about it.
The idea of a perfect company kinda sounds boring to me. If they were perfect, they'd have given us everything we'd ever want, and then there really wouldn't be any new stuff to wait for.

In case there was any doubt left:

Poor Tosh
I hate Blu-ray. I always misspell it "Blue-ray" lol.
I wonder when the next format war will start lol. -

Anyone know WHY sony won ? WHY did Warner Bros studio decide to abandon HD-DVD ?
-
Blu-ray won every single week in movie software sales last year. Warner didn't want to drag out the war longer as it only added to customer confusion so they decided to go with Blu-ray.
And also, Blu-ray is more than just Sony.
