I have a Toshiba Satellite M45-S265 which currently has 1x512MB Samsung DDR333 PC2700 memory module. I want to increase it to 1GB (2x512MB modules) and have a few questions.

Can I simply buy one additional 512MB module (of any quality brand name, with same exact tech specs) and add it to the existing 512MB module? Or do I need to purchase two identical modules from the same maker?

The current memory is DDR-333/PC2700. If I can find a better deal on DDR-400/PC3200, am I correct in understanding it is "backwards compatible" and would simply run at the slower speed of the DDR-333?

Help is appreciated as this is my first laptop memory upgrade. I'm giving it to my nephew as one of his Christmas gifts and want to give it a "tune-up" first. Thanks again!

Yes you can add another 512mb stick and it will work fine. If you buy a ddr400 stick, it will just downclock to match the existing ddr333 stick.

Yes Pc 3200 will work in your system. You could probably buy a 1Gb Pc3200 card cheap, so that you have 1.5Gb of memory.

Great, thanks! I didn't realize that you could mix different amounts (1GB and 512MB) as long as they're the same type and speed.

You can mix size and even speed of RAM it does sometimes cause a slight "Memory Bandwidth" hit, but more RAM should improve the overall performance.
