I currently have a stock toshiba L305-S5955, $299 best buy special. I ordered windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, and am looking to do some upgrades. I am looking at upgrading to 4gb memory, and a better processor. My question is what dual or better processors will work in this computer without a different chipset or other mods. Thanks

I'm not sure which chipset it uses, but I'm guessing GL40. In which case you can use any 800mhz FSB processor. You can go all the way up to the T9500.

so the t6400 would work with my board and chipset? Also, can you explain what factors into a processor being compatible. Basically, is it just that the fsb speed and socket type has to be the same. Can you use a lower fsb speed, such as going from a 800 to a 667.
    Thanks

could u post a screenshot of CPUID CPU-Z showing ur chipset and current processor.... depending on ur chipset ,

if GL 40 , T9500 would be best but T9300 is cheaper but only 0.2GHz slower..
if GL960, T7100 would be best...

OK, so I've decided on the t6400, I found a really good deal on one. Is there any reason someone would advise me against putting this in my laptop? My chipset is the GL40.

Nope, it's a perfectly good Core 2. Just make sure you have the most up-to-date BIOS before installing.

T6400 is average but it should be a great upgrade if ur laptop came with a celeron 900... and like XGX said , update ur BIOS to latest version before installing the T6400...

I tried a T6400 in my L355-S7905 with the same chipset and the latest BIOS (yours should use the same one) and it did not work. Constant blue screens. Just a word of caution before you go try it.

I had a Celeron 585, and am now running a T3400 without issue.

    http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=36681&processor=585&spec-codes=SLB6L

Your processor is only 667 fsb, while the t6400 is 800 like the celeron 900. That might have caused the problem. I compared everything on the intel page between the 900 and the t6400, and every single spec is the same, they were even launched at the same time. Anyways, thanks for the warning, I figure I'll try it out and see what happens, thats the only way you really know if it will work or not.

well that's weird as T6400 should have worked with no problem with GL40... but OP still worth trying... if it doesn't work , just return it...
