I was wondering if my Toshiba M30 (PSM30C-0RUU9) can support Hitachi SATA hard drive in particular Hitachi Travelstar 7K200 200GB 2.5IN 7200RPM SATA 16MB RoHS Notebook Hard Drive

The link to the HDD specifications is: http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=12040DR9882&vpn=0A50940&manufacture=HITACHI

If it does not support, what would be my best buy for ~ 200 GB or 250 GB HDD.
    Any help is highly appreciated.

    Thank you.

The drive you linked to will not work with your machine. It uses a SATA connector while your machine uses a PATA connector. I don't think they are making many larger 7200RPM drives with PATA connectors. If you want a 7200RPM drive you'll have to get the older Hitachi 7k100 or Seagate 7200.1 which I think top out at 100GB. You'd probably better off going with a newer 5400RPM drive especially if you need a lot of space. A lot of the newer 5400RPM drives benchmark fairly close to the older 7200RPM drives and cost less per GB. You'd need something like this though I don't know where to get one in Canada:

The WD2500BEVE (250GB, 5400rpm) is probably the fastest 2.5" HDD with a PATA interface and has a price similar to the 7k200 200GB.

Thanks ZaZ and John Ratsey for the analysis. I live fairly close to US-CAN border so I can shop in USA as well.
I need larger capacity (preferably 200 GB and over) but I was thinking that there are some 7200RPM drives for my machine.
Therefore, what would be my best option in 200-250GB range for my laptop?
Is it WD2500BEVE or any other?
Once again THANKS for the prompt and helpful analysis.
Looking forward to your suggestions, either to be bought in US or CAN

As far as I can discover, the highest capacity 7200rpm 2.5" PATA HDDs (Hitachi 7k100 and Seagate 7200.1) are 100GB and they will lag behind the WD2500BEVE in everything except access time.

You can estimate the relative performance using the Tom's Hardware 2.5" HDD charts. This has the WD2500BEVS which is the SATA version of the -BEVE. The interface speed may be slightly faster and the SATA power consumption is higher than PATA.
