Hey guys, I have a Toshiba M700 with the intel 965 integrated video that has recently been giving me issues. I've already removed and reattached the heatsync with new thermal compound, updated the drivers etc etc, and it looks like the gpu is just crapped out. My question is, can I replace the motherboard in my M700 with one from the M750? Since the video is integrated, replacing the GPU is not an option. Thanks!

    Welcome to NBR :)

usually toshiba likes to use the same chassis for simmilar notebooks.
The M700 does seem to have the same chassis as the M750 (just by looking at the photos).

My guess would be that yes it is going to work.
you may need to get the heatpipes from the M750 too.

BTW what exactly is the problem with the intel 965 itegrated graphics (X3100)?

I have a toshiba tecra a9 with the same graphics, so I'm interested to know what the problem is.

    Also do you have warrenty?

The machine is out of warranty, and the problem is whenever I run anything graphics intensive, it almost instantly overheats the GPU, and usually causes a DEP fault, or the whole computer just BSOD's.

Data Execution Protection, and it's always linked to my GPU malfunctioning. Windows 'advice' is to update my drivers. Pretty worthless.

hmm, I never knew that an X3100 could fail (since it's so weak).

you know the X3100 is part of the chipset (the northbridge and the X3100 are the same chip).

So if the X3100 has failed then I don't see how the northbridge is still fine (again, since they are the same chip)?

Can you try a clean install (maybe there is no hardware problem)?

Hmm.. since it's out of warranty, the repair cost could be expensive,

How about you take it first to Toshiba repair center and let them check what exactly the problem is? If you could afford the repair cost, that's good if it is really that expensive.. Well, at least you know what exactly is the problem and perhaps you could find other way to fix it with lower cost.

@cyberlogicx, how much are you going to pay for the new motherboard?

If I stick with an M700 board, it's $300-$450, depending on where I get it. The M750 board starts at $400 again depending on where I buy it. Toshiba already told me that if the board needs to be replaced, it will run me close to $800. Since I know how to use a screwdriver, I'm just going to do it myself.

As far as using a fresh install of WinVista, I swapped hard drives with a known good one that has only Vista and 3DMark05 on it, and it did the same exact thing 5 seconds into running the test.

    enjoy the new motherboard :)

The reason I like toshiba is that it's easy to find parts.

Actually, I have a crashing Intel X3100 every now and then too - I think it heats up too much before the fan starts up in a Sony SZ71.

Once doing a google search - its possible that the drivers are responsible.

If you are using the latest driver, do a search online, maybe use the old stock driver.

For my SZ the Windows experience index jumped from 3.0 to 3.4 or 3.5 because of the driver...
It possibly tries to get more out of the GPU....

If it's a heat problem then it's easy to solve.

just connect the fan directly to usb power, since most notebook fans are 5V and usb is 5V. The fan will spin at max all the time, this will reduce the life of the fan but the fan is < $30 (I think).

change the thermal paste too, for the northbridge/X3100 use a ceramic paste.

Thanks, a google search turned that up when I was looking to first take it apart.

As far as it just overheating, the fan goes nuts well before it crashes, so I don't think that's the problem.

Where would I find the old driver for it? The ones from Intel don't work, because it's a tablet and it runs a custom driver by Toshiba.

the ones from intel do work.
I had the same problem with my toshiba.

here is how to do it:
download the zip version and manually install it (this is how I do it).
the zip file is just below the normal one.

Go to device manager and right click on the video driver, choose update driver.
Select "browse my computer for driver software"...

I've tried every driver from both Toshiba and Intel, from oldest to newest and it still crashes on me.

Sony had a custom intel driver too - unistal the Sony one and suddenly the Intel one works.

However, in my experince the latest Intel driver was making my Vaio run very hot.
I'm now on a 1 year older (!!) Intel driver for the SZ7 from Sony and will see how it develops - I hope it will run cooler now.

(No OpenGL though any more for example...)

    Edit:
I think the ancient driver is cooler - no guarantee though in your case.
