I dont seem to understand what you want... lol

I have two 320GB WD's one at 5400RPM and the other at 7200RPM both are super speedy...

I'd say ANY 500GB HDD should be perfectly find... especially if its 7200RPM

There are 250GiG/platter, single-platter drives available from Seagate and Hitachi as well.

The difference in performance between the dual-platter and single-platter drives will be very less, and it won't be much quiet than a dual-platter. Power consumption will be less, but HDD power consumption doesn't really affect battery life much.

You can partition a dual-platter drive to get the same performance as the single-platter drives.

The Hitachi 5K500.B is offered in a 120gb, 160gb, 250gb, 320gb, 400gb and 500gb version, with the 250gb and smaller capacities using one platter.
The Western Digital WD5000BEVT is offered in a 400gb and 500gb model. Both are double platter. I do not know why they did not introduce a 250gb model.
And the seagate 5400.6 does have a single platter 250gb model.

All of these drives have the same data density, so they will all perform very similar to each other.

There is definitely a difference in noise and possibly also vibrations between single and dual platter drives. Even the specifications typically say idle/seek 2.2/2.4 Bels for single platter and 2.4/2.6 Bels for dual platter drives.
My experience is that the dual platter drives are just too loud for my taste and only usable as external storage devices.

Samsung suppose to offer a 250GB single platter drive as well. The M7 Spinpoints were announced quite some time ago, but it still says "coming soon" on their web pages.

Has anyone performed any benchmarks on this drive? With the high density I'd expect it to perform pretty well, maybe even as good as some of the smaller 7200rpm drives.

The benchmarks for the dual-platter versions should be the same as the single-platter versions (same data density).

So, a 1x160GB platter drive would have the same performance as a 2x160GB platter drive.

Another consideration is power consumption. Toshiba HDDs tend to run hot (see another thread) and, at the moment, the Hitachi 5K500.B family has one of the lowest power consumptions.
