BACKGROUND - I have a faulty MK4921GAS hard drive in a Toshiba A30. I bought a Samsung HM160HC to replace it. It now transpires that the interface on Toshiba drive is ATA-5 and the Samsung ATA-100 (ATA-6). I understand that the ATA-100 is backwards compatible.
PROBLEM - The Samsung and Toshiba drives each have different black metal shield which protrude over the pin sets. The fact that they are different physically prevents the Samsung drive from being installed.
QUESTION - Is there any way that I can convert the Samsung to fit the Toshiba ATA-5 interface? I've come across reference to an interposer but I don’t seem to have one and can't find one via Google.
Any and all help would be most appreciated - thank you in advance.

Can you pull the shield off the Toshiba and put it on the Samsung? Sometimes laptop manufacturers have a special connector that goes over the pins. Usually you can just pull it off and put it on the new HDD.

No - Having opened up the old Toshiba drive it seems that the shield is an integeral part of the metal frame and can'r be removed. I've not done this to the new Samsung drive as I don't want to risk damage to it.

Here are some screen shots of the two drives showing the shield so that you guys can get a better picture of the problem.

I have also found this - I guess it may mean something in time.

That's what I thought but check out the black metal shield protruding over the pins and you will see (as well as can be shown in these pictures) that those shields are different.
