    Hi,

i am going to buy a Toshiba Portege R600 for its slim design. But i would like to know too if there was a chance to upgrade memory RAM, hard disk capabilities, graphics card and motherboard.

Here you can find some more details about the laptop:

ww/w.getech.co.uk/EPRD3183/Toshiba-Portege-R600-101-Laptop.aspx?STR=5&UNI=0 (Remove the "/" between "ww" and "w")

Please give me some advices. Or advice me some other good laptops. I can buy everything also up to 10.000 $ but i am going to spend that money only for a good laptop.

I would like to have a laptop with slim design, a very good graphics card, a good motherboard, good hard disk and good memory RAM. Is the Toshiba Portege R600 okay or there are better models?

Thanks in advance for the help.

As far as I can see, the R600 is a refresh of the R500, which I reviewed (link below). I don't know if Toshiba have attended to a couple of the annoyances, which were the small, noisy fan and the stiff touchpad buttons.

The only significant upgrade you can do is the HDD. Toshiba have used a standard 2.5" unit so you can go up to 500GB (at the moment) or put in a SSD. However, there are about 20 screws to remove to get at the HDD.

The RAM is already 3GB so you won't get a significant benefit from upgrading it unless you upgrade to a 64 bit OS.

The CPU is probably soldered on the motherboard board and cannot be upgraded and the graphics is definitely not upgradable.

If you want more computing power then the Sony Z series may be worth a look.

    Thanks for the reply.

First time i hear about Sony Z. Comparing to Toshiba R models, Sony Z models are much better.

Can you say me also which Sony Z model is better to buy?

    Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know wether they fixed the fan noise? I really want a transflective screen so R600 is my eminent choice, but I also need a silent laptop (at least not a fan that runs permanently at high speed)...

    Can anyone tell me?

    Thanks in advance!

See the R600 review at Trusted Reviews. I asked about the fan noise.
