I am looking to upgrade the processor in my M30 and am wondering, what is the fastest processor I can put in there?

I will post more details later if need be, such as CPUz info (like motherboard model number, BIOS version, etc)

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Tom

Probably the Pentium M 780, which is 2.2Ghz. It's still a single-core, so I really wouldn't recommend upgrading at this point. As of now you're 2 generations behind. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. :(

No bad news here, this is just a laptop I use once in a while and I figure with Pentium M prices so low on ebay it wouldn't hurt to upgrade it with that and some additional RAM.

My only concern is that the 2.2ghz processor uses a newer core, the Dothan, vs the older Banias. That can be a big deal, at least in desktop upgrades.

Well, you *should* be able to use a Dothan instead of a Banias, but there are slight variations (voltage requirements) that might cause problems.

This guy did it in his Acer..

But as far as getting a definitive answer, I'd suggest trying the Toshiba forum, maybe someone there has info specific to the Satellite.

I haven't looked on ebay lately, how expensive are these things? If I were in your shoes I'd just buy it and see what happens. You can always resell the CPU if it doesn't work.

They go for about ~$25 on ebay, and thats before any bing cashback (currently at 15%).

I am thinking the same thing about just getting one and giving it a whirl, but I guess if its not a definite yes that it will work I may just wait until after the holiday season (yes, I am still just young enough that a gift from my parents *could* include a netbook or something :) ).

Oh and I tried the Toshiba forums, and they referred me here!

Brandon, we sent him over here as they don't discuss much of that over there and Toshiba isn't very forthcoming with bios support information concerning cpu upgrades.

    Toshiba forum is dead...

Moral Hazard, Padme, and some others, including me, are just about the only ones who visit it every day. :(

Since that notebook is fairly old at this point, wouldn't it be worth it just to get a new one?

Ah, that's funny you guys, I've never once popped into the Toshiba forum, I just assumed it was as busy as say, Dell or HP.. My fault! :)

Ahh, very nice. I miss those days! ;) I guess it just depends on if you'd rather pay the $25 now, or wait and see what happens for Christmas. Good luck, I hope you get a shiny new netbook!
