I was wondering if was possible to upgrade my cpu to a little bit faster one. Also is my CPU sse2 (I'm guessing it is). It'd be perfect is someone could link me to a CPU and I can figure the rest out from there. I'm a desktop user (I Have knowledge software wise, hardware not as knowlagable, but I do know more than most. I have upgrade the Hard Drive to 160gb and ram to 1GB so I know how to take apart this laptop.)

well technically you can go up to P4-M 3.2ghz, though the laptop will heat more.
-
2.66GHz is plenty fast....I don't think you have any good options for an upgrade.
Can you download CPU-Z, and link (or half-link) a screenshot image of the first page (CPU) in CPU-Z. -

Is my chipset SSE2 or SSE3?
-
I've tried a while ago a sony with a P4 2.66ghz, another laptop with the P4 3.06 ghz and a thoshiba with a P4 3.2ghz and the difference between them was almost none existant. P4s are desktop CPU. They heat a lot, and in order to preserve themselve inside a laptop against heat, they usually donwclock.
You should invest in more ram. 1GB if you don't use memory intensive applications like photoshop, or 2GB if you use memory intensive applications.
Going for a faster HDD is always worth it.
Your CPU is SSE2 -
My main reason for upgrading was so I can put leo4all on my laptop. I cannot get anything to run on my SSE2. Is the chip you recommend SSE3?
I run photoshop constantly and its a pain to do it on the laptop sometimes. Its not "slow", but not as fast as I'd like it to be.
Oh and I made an error, I do have 2 gigs of ram. -
Those P4s are SSE2.
For SSE3, you'll have to look for the 90nm Prescotts - MP4-HT 5xx series -
pieszbob1 I think you should run CPU-Z to confirm if your P4 support or not SSE3. I did a bit or search and it seems that some P4 supprt only SSE2 but others support SSE3 as well.
If yours doesn't support SSE3 you my upgrade to one that does. It seems that northwood P4 don't have support for SSE3, and Prescott P4 support SSE3 -
I think I am confused on the SSE2 and SSE3 meanings...can someone dumb it down for me? I read the wikipedia page and got a lil handle on it, but I'm new to hardware. I will run the CPU software once I get home.
-
It appears that it is SSE2 only. I need a chip that is SSE3 so I can run mac on my laptop.
I don't have 15 posts yet so I can't link to the image so here is the text link for my cpu-z screenshot.

You can try out these processors, and before trying them out, update the BIOS to the latest version (Mentions P4 3.2GHz and HTT in the history, but nothing about SSE3, D0 and E0-stepping CPUs).
(Upgrade will be a bad idea, mainly because of the higher TDP of the SSE3 chips) -
I already have the bios updated to that version and I will look in to those PCUs. Are they all SSE3? Should I not do it all? I really want to upgrade the PCU because it is cheaper then going to buy a mac book.
-
It does say
If you're gonna upgrade, buy from a place which accepts returns/refunds, and you could give undervolting a try to reduce the TDP.
You'll be better off buying a $300-400 GL960 notebook, and upgrade the CPU on that. -
without going into detail SSE are multimedia instructions/operations that a processor can handle/process.
That said, I'm not sure why you need to up your processor to one that supports SSE3, because as fas I know when you try to install an application/game which is SSE3 compatible on an SSE2 laptop, the application should work with the following:
1- it my runa little bit slower in your laptop compared to a laptop that has an SSE3 CPU.
2- Any function in the application/game that support SSE3 wont be installed.
Guys correct me if the above is wrong.
Also it's a good idea to replace the heatpad situated between the CPU and the fan/cooling assembly with a good quality thermal paste such as Artic Silver 5.
Last night I was a bit tired, but this morning I did a bit of reading about "leo4all". Leo4All is a kind of an emulator that will allow you to run MacOS in a PC platform. Right?
In your case I'm sure that the problem is either comming from Leo4All or from the MacOS version you're using. The SSE3 is not the issue here.
I think that either the Leo4All version you're using is not optimised for the P4 in which case going for an older version might help. Or the MacOS version you're using is too damanding and runs slow in your laptop. For instance MacOS 10.5 is installed on laptops/desktops with duo core, so it's normal if they it runs slow on a PC with only one CPU (i.e. one core.).
Last if the OS you're trying to use is using the 32bit architecture or the 64bit one?
I'm asking because P4 are only designed to run 32bit applications.
