    Hi Guys and Gals,

    I have recently acquired a Toshiba Satellite Pro C850 (14d) – Part No: PSKC9E – 01300JEN

I have upgraded the HDD to a nice 500gb Hybrid Drive and upgraded the RAM from 4gb to 8gb, managed to do this on a nice little budget too.

Anyway I really would like to upgrade my processor from the Celeron B820 (1.7ghz) that is currently installed..

What possible upgrade options do I have? I know Toshiba doesn’t officially support CPU upgrades, but I know this CPU is socketed and I am technically confident when dealing with computers and laptops so this isn’t a problem for me.

From what I can gather the socket is 988B RPGA (G2), the TDP of my old processor is 35w and the chipset is HM76.

Because of these factors I was thinking of upgrading to either ‘i5 3210M 2.5ghz’ or ‘i5 3230M 2.6ghz’ as they share the same TDP (35w), are G2 socket and same chipset.

    HOWEVER

I have some concerns as I have seen some users with c850 laptops reporting they upgraded their laptop CPU and the laptop shut down at the 30 minute mark every time, and understandably I don’t want the same to happen to me.

    here is an example:
Toshiba Support Forums: Satellite C850-13C turns off after CPU ...

Basically I want to know what would be a recommended upgrade for the CPU, I see other laptops in the C850 series with i5’s installed and it would make a great upgrade over my B820.

Thanks a lot for reading guys and hope someone knows the answer :)

TLDR: I want to upgrade my Toshiba Satellite Pro C850 (14d)'s processor from a B820 to something a bit nippier but I'm seeking advice to make sure I buy something that wont cause me any issues :)

Seems like what Toshiba does on alot of their laptops on the lower end, with a gimped chipset, it is unlikely you can upgrade past a Celeron/Pentium. I've heard of issues of similar Toshiba models being upgraded to i3/i5 processors and the laptop shutting down in exactly 30 minutes (BIOS whitelist).

Aw man, that sucks if this is the case are there no workarounds?

Thank you for your reply by the way much appreciated :) I've still a lot to learn with laptops it seems, i've been building desktops for about 7 years but this is my first foray into laptop upgrades, shame they arent so readily upgradable. I mean I am fine taking apart the laptop to put in a new processor but for toshiba to restrict upgrades through the bios, thats annoying :(

Alot of laptops are like that, they have the same iGPU as the non-gimped chipsets, but make it so you can't just upgrade (GL940, GL960, GL40). It's done on purpose.

I was hoping to upgrade this model too but after quickly looking into it I have seen people have this problem. Very limited knowledge in this area so does anyone know if it would be possible to flash the bios from a different c850 model with the same processor as you upgrade to - or will this just cause more problems?
