Subject pretty well covers it. I've just upgraded the ram to 3gb and the hd to a 7200 rpm unit and now I'd like to see what I can do about the processor. I've read here about the gl960's undocumented compatibility with 800mhz fsb processors.
My main concern is this statement from Commander Wolf in the compatibility guide thread:
"While nominally Socket P processors, Core 2 Quads and Core 2 Extremes have a significantly higher TDP than the typical Core 2 Duo. These processors usually require a special motherboard and/or BIOS to function properly. Subsequently, even with the correct socket and chipset, a given notebook may not work properly with the following six processors:"
One of the six being the x7900.
Should I try it or play it safe and go with something like a T7800?
Thanks in advance,
Tony

what do you use this computer for because a processor that fast might not be necessary and your cooling system may not be able to cope with it.
-
I'm sure it would do fine for most (if not all) of what I want to use it for as-is. The desire to upgrade is driven more by the urge to tinker than by any real need.
Thanks,

Might not work. you'll want to check if your notebook supports 45W TDP.
Your best bet would be T9300/T9500 -
Thanks,

I would recommend you to not try the extreme series processors... one guy who did that is having a ton of problems now... literally ruined the whole laptop... i would get a T9300/9500 at most...
-
Ok, 9300/9500 it is. Thanks guys!
Looks like they added Penryn support as of version 1.9 of the bios. I had 1.7 so I flashed it with version 2.5 from Toshiba. I was a little nervous as it was the first time I'd tried updating a bios but it went smoothly.
Now to look for a good deal on a processor.

if ur getting a nice price for a T9500 which is around the price of a T9300 , get the T9500... also look at the notebookreview.com Marketplace... nice deals there... here's the link...

Also, the original processor (T2330) is listed as PPGA478 on intel's site while the T9500 I'm looking at is (I believe) PGA478. All I've been able to find out is that PGA=pin grid array and PPGA=plastic pin grid array. I can't find anything that mentions interchangeability between the two. Is this going to be an issue?
Thanks,
Tony -
Get yourself a good deal by checking NBR Marketplace..
I've seen T9300 on sale for just $150 !
I think you'll be fine with PGA, as long it's not BGA.
Good luck! -
So PGA is good to go then... Thanks!
Oh, and I did some searching in the marketplace and unless I'm not using the search function right, I'm not seeing any mention of T9300s or T9500s for sale in any posts younger than a few months old.
Thanks again,
Tony -
link's PM'ed ..
you don't have to use search, it's there on page 3
Goodluck! -
get the OEM ones.. ES ones might not have thermal sensors and they're technically stolen processors as intel gives them to ppl to test and these ppl dpon't return them and sell the ES processors... OEM's are the actual processors and have full speed and features and of course... thermal sensors...
-
Thanks for the heads-up.
-
i didn't know about that myself... someone on the forum mentioned it and it sealed ES processors in my mind.. i'm nver buying stolen stuff...
Toshiba a205-s5804. X7900 possible?
