Simply amazing. If they can continue the trend set in 2008 by quadrupling the capacity in a year we might see 1TB drives before 2010.
"Toshiba's new drive will be offered in a 2.5-in. form factor and is targeted at laptops, desktops and home entertainment systems, the company said. Samples of the new drives will be available in the first quarter of 2009, with mass production beginning in the second quarter."

I bet starting price will be $1200 lol
-
Why don't they just make 1Tb and 2 Tb SSD's right now
-
Haha, at least $1000 for it starting off. BestBuy may offer "Buy 512GB SSD and get a pack of gum free!"
-
I am still yet to see toshiba's SSD's which were supposed to be released around march? this year...
can someone direct me a link to them...
It was said to be cheaper than the 'current' (which was back then) SSDs. -
That actually wouldn't be too bad. There are some 256GB SSDs going for about $800 now.
-
According to this article, it's actually $1652 which means that at this point, they're aimed exclusively at business executives and extreme enthusiasts. However, this is still great news -- size-wise, the drives are finally in the range where I would purchase one for my Westmere (or AMD equivalent) notebook. In absolute terms, the price is prohibitive... but if you think about it, it's only $3.2/GB which is far less than the average price was in 2008.
The price has nowhere to go but down -- not only because they'll come up with even bigger drives soon enough, but because this is the first of its kind and thus carries a premium. Once Intel, Samsung, et al. catch up, it will drop by a factor of 2 or 3. Then, once a 640 GB or 750GB drive is released, this one will cost a fifth of what it does now. -
I just hope they come down enough for me to get a affordable good SSD in whatever notebook I plan to get in "09" at least 128GB
Toshiba plans 512GB SSDs for Q2 2009
