In my opinion, when I use my friend notebook to create a document or report which have several pages. I notice that during I use word processing software, the mouse cursor sometimes it move from one line to another line but I do not touch the mouse or touchpad. I think my finger touch the pad by unintention. This mistake cause me to undo and retype again which is not cause too much pain but it's annoy.

So, I think if my new laptop have button to turn the touchpad on/off would be better. however, I do not know every laptop offer this function or not.

I take a look at HP DV8000 series and feel curiously how to turn the touchpad off??? Are there any hidden button that I do not know please? or just only some model do not offer the touchpad on/off button.

and what do you think? is it necessary or unnecessary please?

Just use the palm check options, then you can set the touch pad so you don't accidentally bump it. Alternatively, you can use a mouse and set the touchpad to turn off when you use he mouse. You hve plenty of options here.

I just have my touchpad turned off when a mouse is connected. You can turn off the touchpad in most touchpad drivers. Also, like mentioned above you can adjust palm check sensitivity so it doesn't respond to stray touches. It would be nice to have a software shortcut to turnoff the touchpad in the drivers if a notebook didn't have the ability hardware-wise.

There's sometimes a function key which will turn the touchpad on and off, too. That's how toshiba does it.

Yeah, I heard function keys do and some laptops (ZV6000) have a button by the touchpad...I always bump mine so I turn it off when I type a lot or when I'm using my mouse. Outside of that, I know some software makes it easy by putting an icon in the system tray to quickly turn it on or off also.

excuse me, how do I check the manufacture of the touchpad in laptop please?

I mean, I see no driver and I dont know how to turn it off... maybe I need to find the driver first.

anybody around here use HP DV8000 (17" inch) please? I want to hear from you are there anyway from both software and/or hardware that allow me to turn the touchpad on/off or not?

I have it and I like it, I do a lot of video editing and when I dont turn it off (even with all the palm check settings on) it moves some clips or transitions in my videos. I would say that it isnt a nessesity, but its very convienient.

I love that feature, it's a must have. When I'm typing large documents, I often(not sure why, it just happenes), hit the touchpad, resulting in the text being moved around, which is annoying.
