Hi, new to the forum. Hope this hasn't been discussed-to-death, but I couldn't find it with the search tool.

I'm wondering, is it possible to upgrade a Toughbook CF-28 from an 800Mhz P3 to something faster?

    Thanks
    Hoot

I say upgrade the hard drive or add more memory as you'll get a bigger boost there.

yep, i already got another 256MB of RAM coming for a total of 512MB (i think that's the max this machine will take) and I'm also going to get a seagate 80GB 7200 RPM HD. I was just wondering about the processor to try and squeeze every last bit of performance out of this 'ol horse. i'm just not sure if the motherboard can even handle a faster CPU. how can i find out?

I'm ganna try the same thing when i get mine (in the mail). Unless its soldered to the motherboard in which case it'd be unpossible, unless your a soldering robot. I looked on ebay and found a 1200 tualatin which was the kickinest pIII for 24$. Also the freq.Multiplier has to be unlocked otherwise it'd just run at 800. Can you change that in the bios? Theres alot of ifs, but im pulling for ya.

HAH!! oh yeah, definitely FUGLY, but it's the mobile-mounted machine in the truck so it doesn't enter many fashion contests. besides, i can get a deal on the parts (and even the labor if it's beyond my ham-fisted skills), so i was hoping a CPU swap was a simple matter.

Myth, Let me know if you have any luck with your attempt. [**cough**guinnea pig**cough**] ;)
I'll be sure to post back with anything i find out on it.

replace that thing with a cheap $500 Dell B130, it will perform 10x better.

I'm not sure if the the CPU in the CF-28's are SMD or Socketed, but I do know that there are 3 models that's I've seen, a 600 Mhz, 800 Mhz, and 1000 Mhz models, so upgrade of the unit should be possible. In regards to the CF-28, does anyone know what the connector for the CD drive looks like, I am getting ready to purchase an 800Mhz touchscreen unit, but it doesn't include the CD drive, I do know it's modular (goes in the same bay as the floppy), I've modified several laptop optical drives from various laptops to fit into other laptops, usually it's just a matter of getting the back panel adapter which matches up the drives IDE interface to the interface in the specific laptop, some of them are designed to work directly with the placement of the adapters, but most aren't. I'm hoping to be able to track down the coupler to allow me to use one of the multiple drives I have lying around.

As far as I know the CPUs are soldered in... No way to get them out. You'd need to swap out the MoBo. The CDs are easy to change. I just posted in a few other posts how to do it. The case comes apart very easy and goes back the same. I upgraded mine to a DVD & CD/RW. (slimline obvously) I also upgraded to a 80GB 7200 RPM Seagate drive that pretty much doubled the speed of the laptop. I'd do that before anything else if you want speed. Just my .02
